Death - "Spiritual Healing" (1990)

"Spiritual Healing" ma podobno ten problem, że ukazał się pomiędzy bardziej przełomowymi od niego "Leprosy" oraz "Human" - stąd jego rzekomo nieco mniejsza popularność. No i cóż, nawet jeśli to prawda, pozostaje każdemu życzyć takiego bycia pominiętym. Tak naprawdę, "Spiritual Healing" to kolejna znakomita pozycja w dorobku Death, świetnie rozwijająca patenty "Leprosy" i będąca równie ważnym krokiem w rozwoju Chucka co inne płyty jego zespołu. Jak dla mnie, to od niej zaczął się najlepszy czas w twórczości Schuldinera, gdzie praktycznie każda następna płyta Death była coraz to lepsza od poprzedniej (mimo, że dosłownie wszystkie zasługiwały na podium). Omawiana po prostu zyskała przydomek pominiętej totalnie od czapy. Jedyny plus z tego taki, że można było na tym oprzeć wstęp i co nieco niektórych porządnie zbaitować.

Na trójce - podobnie jak poprzednio - zmieniły się proporcje między techniką a brutalnością (na korzyść tego pierwszego), doszły jeszcze ciekawsze pomysły (ponownie od strony gitar), utwory zyskały na znacznie bardziej rozbudowanych strukturach, poszła do przodu produkcja, a klimat muzyki stał się zdecydowanie mocniej pesymistyczny (okładka i tytuły powinny wyjaśnić tutaj wszystko). Po raz pierwszy też, na płycie Death znalazł się pełny skład. O ile Bill Andrews i Terry Butler nie wybijają się tu żadną ekstrawagancją ponad pomysły Schuldinera, tak nowy w zespole James Murphy wniósł o wieeele więcej niż jego poprzednik. Solówki to jedno (czego najlepszym przykładem pojedynek gitarowy w "Low Life"), ale pomysłowość i jakość wykonania to coś co najbardziej sprawia, że po "Spiritual Healing" sięgam częściej od "Leprosy" (mimo, że ocena ta sama). Nie ma mowy o sztucznym szpanowaniu umiejętnościami.

Nadal jest przede wszystkim death metalowo i z odpowiednim wygarem, mimo dosyć technicznego podejścia do grania. Przykładem chociażby "Altering The Future", "Killing Spree", "Living Monstrosity" czy "Defensive Personalities", które obfitują w jeszcze ciekawsze riffy od kawałków z "Leprosy", są bardziej rozbudowane, a przy tym w takich samych proporcjach stawiają na łomot. Technika dodała im po prostu kolejnego wymiaru, bez naruszania ciężaru. Lekkim zmianom uległ także wokal Chucka, którego rzyg jest odrobinę niższy (choć np. w tytułowcu zdarza mu się też okazjonalny wyższy). Poza tym, wszystko w większości pozostało w oparciu o patenty "Leprosy" i ulepszaniu tamtej stylistyki.

Trudno więc o lepsze zobrazowanie pojęcia tak samo, ale lepiej. "Spiritual Healing" to kolejne ważne wydawnictwo Death, będące logicznym rozwinięciem "Leprosy" oraz preludium do pomysłów z "Human". No a do tego to kolejne ważne wydawnictwo zawierające masę hitów, które z miejsca trafiają do kategorii ulubione i nawet po wielu latach wciąż potrafią podobać się tak samo co przy pierwszym poznaniu.

"Spiritual Healing" reportedly has the problem that it was released between the more groundbreaking "Leprosy" and "Human" - hence its supposedly slightly less popular. Well, even if it is true, it remains for everyone to wish to be so left out. In fact, "Spiritual Healing" is another great cd in Death's discography, brilliantly developing "Leprosy" patents and being as important a step in Chuck's development as other albums of his band. As for me, from "Spiritual...", it was the best time in the discography of Schuldiner began, where practically every next Death's album was better and better than the previous one (although literally all of them deserved a podium finish). The discussed one simply gained the nickname of being totally pointless. The only plus was that I could base my introduction on it and cheat some of the listeners. 

On "Spiritual..." - as before - the proportions between technique and brutality changed (in favor of the former), even more interesting ideas were added (again from the guitar side), the songs gained on much more complex structures, the production went ahead, and the atmosphere of the music has become much more pessimistic (the cover and titles should explain everything here). For the first time, there was a "full" line-up on the Death album. While Bill Andrews and Terry Butler do not stand out with any extravagance above Schuldiner ideas, the new in the band James Murphy contributed a lot more than his predecessor. Solos are very important (the best example of which is a guitar duel in "Low Life"), but the ingenuity and quality of workmanship are what make me use "Spiritual Healing" more often than "Leprosy" (although the rating is the same). There is no exaggerated show of skills. 

It's still mostly death metal and with the right balance, despite quite technical approach to playing. For example, "Altering The Future", "Killing Spree", "Living Monstrosity" or "Defensive Personalities", which abound in even more interesting riffs than the tracks from "Leprosy", are more complex, and at the same proportions they put on a beat. The technique just added another dimension without breaking the burden. Chuck's vocal has also slightly changed, his vomit is a bit lower (although, for example, in the title track he also occasionally gets higher). Besides, most of everything is based on "Leprosy" patents and improvements to that style. 

So it's difficult to better illustrate the concept of "the same, but better". "Spiritual Healing" is another important release by Death, which is a logical extension of "Leprosy" and a prelude to ideas from "Human". In addition, this is another important release containing a lot of hits, which immediately fall into the "favorite" category and even after many years they can still be liked as much as when they first listened.
