Contrarian - "Only Time Will Tell" (2020)

Cholernie szybko panowie z Contrarian uwinęli się ze swoim czwartym krążkiem - zajęło im to raptem rok. Biorąc pod uwagę mocne przetasowania w składzie i dosyć średni poziom poprzedniego krążka, mogła wyjść z tego płyta dużo słabsza od "Their Worm Never Dies". Na szczęście, stało się inaczej, a "Only Time Will Tell" pokazał, że zespół jeszcze ma trochę ciekawych pomysłów na to jak grać progresywny death metal w 2020 roku. I to na tyle, żeby wpisać się w nieco inny styl niż na poprzednich albumach. Otóż, tym razem muzyka Contrarian nasuwa skojarzenia z...wczesnym Fallujah! Czyli z czymś, co granie w typie Augury, Death, Cynic przeważnie średnio idzie w parze! Co najdziwniejsze (i najlepsze), te wszystkie bardziej wysublimowane i przestrzenne patenty, których tu niemało, nie wpłynęły na rozwodnienie materiału czy ogólne osłabienie tożsamości zespołu. Wręcz przeciwnie, powiedziałbym, że nadały kolejnego wymiaru muzyce Contrarian.

O przedobrzenie oczywiście też nie trudno w takiej stylistyce (co niektóre wydawnictwa Fallujah boleśnie potwierdzają), ale kwintet z Contrarian poradził sobie z tym dużo lepiej niż kilku innych, no a jednocześnie pokazał, że nie jest kolejnym zespołem aspirującym do wpisania się w jakieś sztuczne trendy. Stworzyli oni po prostu płytę, która - choć nie wybitna - fajnie odświeża styl zespołu i wprowadza w przyzwoitych ilościach sensownych zmian. Pierwsze przyniósł odmieniony skład. Na stanowisko wokalisty powrócił bowiem Cody McConnell (z dużo lepszymi growlami niż na "Polemic"), a sekcję rytmiczną objęli zupełnie nowi, ale równie utalentowani co poprzednicy, Bill Bodily oraz Bryce Butler. Instrumentalnie nie trzeba nic więcej dodawać - wiadomo było, że będzie cacy. Najbardziej zaskakujące z tego są tutaj jednak wokale, a w szczególności te czyste, które naprawdę fajnie urozmaicają całość i mimo, że brzmią - nie lubię tego określenia - na czasie, nie psują ogólnie dobrego wrażenia z muzyki. No a skoro na tym się panowie z Contrarian nie wyłożyli, szczegółowy opis reszty muzyki nie jest jakoś wymagany - w tym celu odsyłam do poprzednich recenzji.

"Only Time Will Tell" to w sporej części utwory bliskie stylistyce debiutu, niekiedy może nieco bardziej progresywne, melodyjne, a nawet relaksacyjne (czyt. przesiąknięte Cynic/Fallujah - o czym wspominałem na wstępie), ale wciąż przede wszystkim nastawione na ciężar i nienaganne wymiatanie na instrumentach. Warto wspomnieć w tym miejscu chociażby o "Case Closed", "Scarlet Babylon", "In A Blink Of An Eye" czy "The Final Hour", w których takie połączenie wypada chyba najbardziej przekonująco, choć i z resztą niewymienionych nie jest gorzej. Samej płytki i tak słucha się ze sporym zaciekawieniem, nie przypomina przesadnie poprzednich i ma w zanadrzu trochę kawałków, które mogą ubiegać się o bycie "hitem" - jak dla mnie to wystarczająco jako pretekst do jej sprawdzenia. "Only Time Will Tell" pokazuje też, że Contrarian wciąż ma interesujące pomysły na swoją muzykę i że pomimo chujowych okoliczności w jakich została wydana, zespół wciąż wie czym przyciągnąć słuchaczy.

The Contrarian band made their fourth album very quickly - it took them only a year. Taking into the strong reshuffles in the line-up and the rather average level of the previous album, the album could have come out much weaker than "Their Worm Never Dies". Fortunately, things turned out differently and "Only Time Will Tell" showed that the band still has some interesting ideas on how to play progressive death metal in 2020. And that's enough to fit into a slightly different style than on the previous albums. Well, this time Contrarian's music brings to mind...early Fallujah! So with something that playing like Augura, Death, Cynic usually doesn not work well! What is strangest (and best), all those more sophisticated and "spatial" patents, which are quite a few here, did not dilute the material or weaken the band's identity. On the contrary, I would say they gave another dimension to Contrarian music. 

Of course, it's not difficult to overdo it in this style (which later Fallujah releases painfully confirm), but the Contrarian quintet coped with it much better than several others and at the same time showed that it's not another band aspiring to fit into some artificial trends. They just created an album that - although not outstanding - refreshes the band's style nicely and introduces a decent amount of meaningful changes. The first one was brought by a changed line-up. Cody McConnell returned to the position of vocalist (with much better growls than on "Polemic") and the rhythm section was taken over by completely new, but equally talented as his predecessors, Bill Bodily and Bryce Butler. There is no need to add anything more of instruments side - it was known that it would be nice. The most surprising of this, however, are the vocals, especially the clean ones, which diversify the whole thing really nicely and although they sound - I don't like that term - "on time", they do not spoil the overall good impression of the music. Well, since the gentlemen from Contrarian did not explain it, a detailed description of the rest of the music is not required somehow - I refer to the previous reviews for this purpose. 

"Only Time Will Tell" has largely songs close to the style of the debut, sometimes a bit more progressive, melodic, and even relaxing (saturated with Cynic/Fallujah influences - as I mentioned at the beginning), but still mostly aimed at death metal side and interesting technique. It's worth mentioning here, for example, "Case Closed", "Scarlet Babylon", "In A Blink Of An Eye" or "The Final Hour", in which this combination is probably the most convincing, although it's not worse with the rest of the others. The album itself is listened to with considerable interest, it does not resemble the previous ones too much and it has some tracks up its sleeve that can claim to be a "hit" - enough for me as an excuse to check it out. "Only Time Will Tell" also shows that Contrarian still has interesting ideas for their music and that despite the shitty COVID-19 times in which it was released, the band still knows what to attract listeners.
