Autopsy - "Tourniquets, Hacksaws And Graves" (2014)

Szybkie tempo wydawnicze zaskakiwało już poprzednim razem, tymczasem Amerykanie z Autopsy z następcą "The Headless Ritual" uwinęli się...w rok! Tym większe jest moje zaskoczenie, bo "Tourniquets, Hacksaws And Graves" nie jest jakąś tam "zwyczajną" kontynuacją swoich dwóch poprzedników. Pewne punkty wspólne i nawiązania do wcześniejszych krążków jak najbardziej posiada, ale nie w takim stopniu, by nazywać je powtarzalnymi czy zrobionymi na kolanie. Nawet pomimo tego, że "Tourniquets..." prezentuje się najsłabiej spośród "powrotnej trójcy" Autopsy, czuć, że także na tym wydawnictwie, Reifertowi i spółce pomysły wciąż dopisywały.

Cel był dosyć prosty - dorzucić więcej wpływów Venom i Abscess. No a to na szczęście wyszło naszym bohaterom na dobre i na miarę poprzednich longów, a jednocześnie na tyle ciekawie, by nie zatrzeć różnorodności ani też nie popaść w przesadnie proste granie oparte o jeden-dwa motywy. Strona death metalowa krążka (a mówiąc bardziej precyzyjnie, ta death/doomowa) wypada oczywiście bez zarzutów; riffy, solówki, wokale, perkusja, klimat - to wszystko trzyma się tu charakterystycznie "zgniłej" dla Autopsy stylistyki. Punkowa część z kolei wprowadza trochę szaleństwa i - jakby to ładnie ująć - koncertowej chwytliwości. Otóż, naprawdę nie sposób odmówić tego takim utworom jak "After The Cutting", "King Of Flesh Ripped" czy "Savagery"! Niejednego śmiałka mogą one porwać w podsceniczny młyn. Równie dobre wrażenie robią też tutaj "Teeth Of The Shadow Horde", "Burial", "Autopsy" czy w szczególności "The Howling Dead" (z rewelacyjnym schizolskim początkiem) oraz "Deep Crimson Dreaming" (nasuwający trochę skojarzeń z "Sadistic Gratification"). Największe zastrzeżenia wobec "Tourniquets..." mam za to od strony długości krążka (podobnie jak na "Macabre Eternal"). No a tu dokładniej mam na myśli ilość utworów, gdzie dużo lepiej byłoby zawęzić album do dziewięciu utworów (wywalając przerywnik "All Shall Bleed" oraz średnie "Parasitic Eye" i "Forever Hungry") aniżeli pozostawać przy aż dwunastu kawałkach. Całości generalnie słucha się dobrze i bez większych oporów, jedynie od czasu do czasu przytrafiają się na krążku momenty, przy których korci przewinąć dalej, by usłyszeć w co się dany kawałek rozwinie.

Aż tak ważne to na tę chwilę jednak nie jest. Najważniejsze, że "Tourniquets, Hacksaws And Graves" to kolejna bardzo dobra pozycja w dorobku "powrotnego" Autopsy, utrzymująca poziom poprzedniczek i mająca w zanadrzu kawał porządnych obleśnie death metalowych utworów. Nie ma na niej tego efektu wow co na "Macabre..." oraz "The Headless...", ale jest za to porządnie przemyślana muzyka. No a jak na wydawnictwo tworzone w tak krótkim czasie przez kapelę formatu Autopsy, jest to kurewsko dobry wynik.

The fast publishing pace was surprising last time, while the Americans from Autopsy with the successor to "The Headless Ritual" hit...in a year! The greater is my surprise, because "Tourniquets, Hacksaws And Graves" is not some "ordinary" continuation of its two predecessors. It has some common points and references to earlier discs, but not to such an extent as to call them repetitive or pointless. Even though "Tourniquets..." is the worst among the "return trinity" of Autopsy, you can feel that this release, Reifert and the rest of the band were still getting ideas. 

The purpose was quite simple - add more Venom and Abscess influence. Well, fortunately, Autopsy turned out to be good and in line with previous longs, and at the same time interesting enough not to blur the variety or fall into overly simple punky-metal based on one or two themes. The death metal side of the album (or more precisely, the death/doom side) is obviously flawless; riffs, solos, vocals, drums, atmosphere - all this is kept in a characteristic "rotten" style for Autopsy. The punk side, in turn, introduces a bit of madness and - to put it nicely - concert catchiness. Well, you really can't deny it to songs like "After The Cutting", "King Of Flesh Ripped" or "Savagery"! They can kidnap many daredevils into mosh pit. The "Teeth Of The Shadow Horde", "Burial", "Autopsy" or in particular "The Howling Dead" (with a sensational psychic beginning) and "Deep Crimson Dreaming" (bringing some associations to "Sadistic Gratification") make an equally good impression here. I have the biggest disappointments about "Tourniquets..." from the length of the disc (similarly to "Macabre Eternal"). Well, more precisely, I mean the number of songs, where it would be much better to narrow the album to nine songs (without the interlude of "All Shall Bleed" and the average "Parasitic Eye" and "Forever Hungry") than to stick to twelve songs. The whole cd is generally listened to well and without much hesitation, only from time to time there are moments on the disc when it is tempting to scroll further to hear what a given song will develop into. 

But at this moment it's not that important. Most importantly, "Tourniquets, Hacksaws And Graves" is another very good cd in the discography of "return" Autopsy, keeping the level of its predecessors and having a lot of decent death metal tracks up its sleeve. There is no wow effect on it as on "Macabre..." and "The Headless...", but there is well thought out music. Well, for a release created in such a short time, it's a really good result.
