Gnostic - "Engineering The Rule" (2009)

Skok na kasę i jechanie na sentymentach - pierwsze co przychodzi na myśl, gdy widzi się tego typu nowe projekty, które od samego początku powołują się na wielkie nazwy i niewiele ponadto. Ale, ale, Season Of Mist uczynił jednak o tyle sporo, by wypromować omawiany Gnostic na projekt powiązany z graniem Atheist, a jednocześnie, który potrafi zaoferować nową jakość i pokazać kolejną ewolucję tego stylu. [miejsce na salwę śmiechu] Otóż tylko w teorii! Samobój pojawił sie bowiem nawet w miejscu owej "gwiazdorskiej obsady", którą tak się szczycili. Cóż, ze składu Atheist znalazł się tu jedynie perkusista Steve Flynn, pozostali instrumentaliści zaś, to ludzie z Atheist, którzy dołączyli do zespołu po 2006 roku (czyli nikt ze starej ekipy), a wokalista Kevin Freeman to już osobnik całkowicie niezwiązany z tamtą nazwą. Inna sprawa, że nawet bez takiego wydawcy i wabika dorobkiem Atheist, "Engineering The Rule" nie wywoływałby specjalnie lepszych odczuć.

Ta płyta to materiał totalnie położony przez frontmana i jego wyrwane z zupełnie innej parafii wokalizy, irytujące niemal na każdym kroku. Ba, taka - wydawać by się mogło - błahostka, podczas przesłuchania kilku pierwszych kawałków może skutecznie zniechęcić do całokształtu projektu! Instrumentaliści - chcąc chyba przecierać szlaki niczym niegdyś Atheist - postanowili do death-jazzu podejść równie nietypowo co wiadomy zespół, ale z tą różnicą, że...bez większego sensu. Tak wnioskuję, bo do zespołu ściągnęli gościa, który zdziera gardło rodem jak z jakiegoś metalcore'a! Ja wiem, nawet w takim gatunku zdarzają się perełki i jakieś tam wyjątki od reguły, ale Gnostic zdecydowanie do takowych nie należy, no a z choćby dobrą mieszanką gatunkową nie ma nic wspólnego. Po mojemu, Freeman oferuje wszystko co najgorsze w tego typu śpiewie - jednowymiarowe i pozbawione pazura wrzaski oraz bezjajeczne urozmaicenia na czysto (na szczęście w mniejszości). Może chodziło w tym o jakiś powiew świeżości, pokazanie nowego spojrzenia na gatunek czy po prostu niebycie Atheist 1:1, przypuszczam, że żadne z powyższych, ale pewnym jest, że odbiera to muzyce moc i spłaszcza jej wielowymiarowość. 

Szkoda, bo instrumentalnie "Engineering..." jest naprawdę dosyć ciekawy, zakręcony i nieźle przebiera w patentach Atheist z okresu "Piece Of Time" i "Unquestionable Presence" (co słychać po najbardziej znośnych "Mindlock", "Composition", "Corrosive" oraz "Violent Calm", ale pewnie w paru innych też). Jak jednak widać, słuchanie tego krążka w znacznej większości przyprawia o zgrzytanie zębami i serię rozczarowań. No bo "Engineering The Rule" doskonale pokazuje, że do takiego grania potrzebny jest konkretny i zróżnicowany ponad przeciętność wokal.

Sales pitch and cheap fondnesses - the first thing that comes to mind when you see this type of new projects that refer to big names from the very beginning and not much else. But, but, Season Of Mist did so much to promote the discussed Gnostic as a project related to Atheist, and at the same time, which can offer a new quality and show the next evolution of this style. [place for a burst of laughter] Only in theory! The defet appeared even in the place of this "star cast", which they were so proud of. Well, from the Atheist line-up there is only drummer Steve Flynn, the other instrumentalists are people from Atheist who joined the band after 2006 (so no one from the old line-up), and vocalist Kevin Freeman is completely unrelated to that name. Another thing is that even without such a publisher and the lure of Atheist's achievements, "Engineering The Rule" would not have caused much better feelings. 

This album is material totally laid by the frontman and his vocals torn from a completely different style, irritating almost at every step. Well, this - it might seem - trivial, while listening to the first few tracks can effectively discourage the entire project! Instrumentalists - probably wanting to pave the way like the former Atheist - decided to approach death-jazz as unusual as the known band, but with the difference that...without much sense. I assume so, because they brought a guy to the band who tears his throat straight as if from style of metalcore! I know, even in this genre there are gems and some exceptions to the rule, but Gnostic definitely does not belong to them, and it has nothing to do with even a good mix of genres. In my opinion, Freeman offers everything that is the worst in this type of singing - one-dimensional and clawless screams and weak variety of clean vocals (luckily in the minority). Maybe it was about a breath of fresh air, showing a new perspective on the genre or just not being Atheist 1:1, I suppose neither of the above, but it's sure that it takes away the power of the music and flattens its multidimensionality. 

It's a pity, because instrumentally "Engineering..." is really interesting, twisted and combines good in Atheist patents from the "Piece Of Time" and "Unquestionable Presence" period (which can be heard from the most tolerable "Mindlock", "Composition", "Corrosive" and "Violent Calm", but probably in a few others as well). However, as you can see, listening to this disc causes ear pain and a series of disappointments in the vast majority of cases. Well, because "Engineering The Rule" perfectly shows that for such death-jazz you need a specific and diverse vocal.
