Mayhem - "Atavistic Black Disorder/Kommando" (2021)

Pandemiczne czasy w ekstremalnej muzyce to w większości okres wydawania epek, odwoływania tras i - co za tym idzie - wszelkich obiecanek na lepsze jutro. W związku z zaistniałą sytuacją, przypomnieć o sobie dali także Mayhemowcy za sprawą epki "Atavistic Black Disorder/Kommando" i...równie dobrze mogliby tego nie robić! Powstało im bowiem wydawnictwo zaskakująco wymuszone, pokraczne i zorientowane na tani zysk - o podejściu niemal do nich niepodobnym. Co gorsza, owa epka nawet jako pomniejsza ciekawostka nie wypada bardziej okazale - i piszę to z perspektywy lubującego się w graniu Mayhem.

Ma się wrażenie jakby "Atavistic..." był po prostu czymś na kształt zbioru wszystkiego co zespół miał aktualnie pod ręką - w tym najgorszym znaczeniu. Potwierdzenie znaleźć można już w pierwszych trzech utworach. Najpierw w "Black Glass Communion" i "Everlasting Dying Flame" znanych wcześniej z "Daemon" pod postacią bonusów, potem w rzekomo największej atrakcji tej epki, czyli "Voces Ab Alta" - utworze pierwotnie niewydanym. Niestety, wszystkie z tej trójki łączy jednakowo bezmyślne zapatrzenie w "De Mysteriis...", średnio porywający klimat i spora zachowawczość. Wprawdzie podobne zarzuty padały już w recce "Daemon", aczkolwiek tam nie było mowy o czymś tak nieudolnym i potwornie odtwórczym jak tu, no a grupa mimo wszystko wiedziała w jaki sposób przywdziać starsze patenty w nowszą oprawę - 7/10 nie wzięło się znikąd.

Jak na ironię, na tym jednak nie polega główny problem "Atavistic..."! Największą wtopą jest druga strona tej epki, czyli covery punkowych klasyków (m.in. Dead Kennedys, Discharge). Samo wykonanie oczywiście trzyma poziom (i jest dość bliskie oryginałów), ale cóż, nijak się ono ma do odpadów z "Daemon" czy generalnie stylu zespołu (nawet tego bardziej eksperymentalnego). Odbiór psują przede wszystkim dwa elementy: melodyjność i/lub polityczny klimat, które po mojemu niespecjalnie pasują do Mayhem (w czym nie pomogło też gościnne zaproszenie Messiaha oraz Maniaca - ex-wokalistów grupy). Odnosi się wrażenie jakby grupa nagrała te kawałki zupełnie dla jaj i byleby jakkolwiek (czyli bez pomysłu) uatrakcyjnić ten materiał. Pytanie tylko, czy warto w ten sposób zaburzać sobie ogólnie wysoki poziom dyskografii.

Pandemic times in extreme music are mostly a period of releasing eps, canceling tours and - as a result - all promises "for a better tomorrow". Due to the situation, Mayhem also reminded of themselves with the ep "Atavistic Black Disorder/Kommando" and...they might as well not do it! They created a surprisingly forced, clunky and cheap-profit-oriented publishing cd with an approach almost unlike them. What is worse, this ep, even as a minor curiosity, does not look more impressive - and I am writing it from the perspective of fan. 

It feels like "Atavistic..." is just something like a collection of everything the band currently had - in the worst sense. Confirmation can be found in the first three songs. First in "Black Glass Communion" and "Everlasting Dying Flame" previously known from "Daemon" in the form of bonuses, then in the allegedly greatest attraction of this ep, "Voces Ab Alta" - originally unreleased. Unfortunately, all of the three share the same thoughtless focus on "De Mysteriis...", a moderately thrilling atmosphere and considerable conservatism. Admittedly, similar accusations were already made in the "Daemon" review, although there was no talk of something as inept and monstrously recreational as here, and the group still knew how to put older patents in a newer ideas - 7/10 did not come out of nowhere. 

Ironically, this is not the main problem with "Atavistic..."! The biggest disadvantage is the second side of this ep, i.e. covers of punk classics (incl. Dead Kennedys, Discharge). The performance itself, of course, keeps the level (and is quite close to the originals), but well, it has nothing to do with the b-sides of "Daemon" or the band's style in general (even the more experimental one). The reception is spoiled primarily by two elements: melodiousness and/or political climate, which in my opinion do not suit to Mayhem very much (which was also not helped by the guest invitation of Messiah and Maniac - ex-vocalists of the group). One has the impression that the group recorded these songs completely just for a mockery or just anyway (i.e. without an idea) to make this material more attractive. The only question is whether it's worth disturbing the generally high level of discography in this way.
