Incantation - "Profane Nexus" (2017)

Dziwna konkluzja nachodzi mnie przy tym "Profane Nexus". Bo szczerze mówiąc...to jedna z najsłabszych płyt w dorobku Incantation! Naturalnie, powodów do wstydu na niej także nie ma co się doszukiwać, ba!, po zsumowaniu nie wychodzi tego wcale aż tak dużo jak może się z pozoru wydawać, aczkolwiek podobne wątpliwości nasuwają się przy wskazaniu plusów i potwierdzeniu wiarygodności rzekomego powrotu do bardzo wysokiej formy, o którym wspominałem w poprzednich reckach - co gorsza nawet po kilkunastu odsłuchach. Niestety, nie ma tu tego dobrego na tyle co na "Dirges Of Elysium" oraz "Vanquish In Vengeance", a na ile mogłaby sugerować zajebiście oldschoolowa okładka czy ogólnie styl tej zasłużonej - przecież - kapeli.

Kolejny zgrzyt tyczy się samej konstrukcji utworów. "Profane..." to bowiem powrót do szybszych rejonów ze znacznie mniejszą ilością tych doomowych, a tak naprawdę dość zachowawczy skok w średnio-szybkie rejony i granie generalnie poskąpione szaleństwa. Zbyt mocna jednolitość kawałków to jedno, ale mnie się wydaję, że - jak na ironię - lepiej sprawdziłaby się w tym wydaniu większa ilość tych ślamazarnych fragmentów. Fajnie by się to mogło zgrywać z charakterystycznym dla tego zespołu, tajemniczym, undergroundowym klimatem, a i z wspomnianymi, oszczędniejszymi aranżami. Takiej nie za ciekawej sytuacji nie pomaga również produkcja - ponownie zbyt dopieszczona. Bronią się wokale Johna i bardziej wyeksponowany bas, niestety gitarom oraz perce wyraźnie brakuje mięcha i - po drugiej stronie - siarczystego brudu. Przez to też, ulotniła się znaczna część - nie tak dawnej - mocy.

Jak wspominałem, najlepiej wypadają na krążku wolniejsze i bardziej klimatyczne kawałki w typie "Incorporeal Dispear", "Visceral Hexahedron", "The Horns Of Gefrin" czy "Messiah Nostrum", w których najbardziej da się odczuć ducha poprzedniej płyty, tj. całkiem sensowny kompromis pomiędzy klarownością a ciężarem. Reszta z niewymienionych (poza totalnie zbędnym przerywnikiem bliżej końca płyty) również może się podobać, choć fakt faktem, odczuwalne jest w nich delikatne przemęczenie formuły i znacznie mniejsza zaczepność od tych wymienionych z początku tego akapitu. Inna sprawa, że któraś z płyt Incantation przy tak obfitej dyskografii po prostu musi przynależeć do tych najsłabszych. Wybór padł na "Profane...", a i to tylko i wyłącznie ze względu na wysoko zawieszoną poprzeczkę po dwóch poprzednich, znakomitych albumach. Wspomniałem w końcu, że "Profane Nexus" powodów do wstydu zespołowi nie przynosi.

I have a strange conclusion about the "Profane Nexus". Because honestly...it's one of the weakest cds in Incantation's discography! Of course, there is no need to look for reasons to be ashamed of "Profane...", well!, when summed up, it does not come out as much as it may seem, however, similar doubts appear when pointing to the advantages and credibility of the alleged return to a very high form, which I mentioned in previous reviews - even worse, even after a dozen or so listening sessions. Unfortunately, it's not as close as on "Dirges Of Elysium" and "Vanquish In Vengeance", and as far as it could suggest an oldschool cover art or the general style of this well-deserved band. 

Another glitch concerns the structures of the songs. "Profane..." is a return to faster regions with a much smaller number of doom ones, but actually quite a conservative jump into medium-fast regions and playing generally without much madness. Strong uniformity of the songs are one thing, but I think that - ironically - more of these doomish fragments would work better in this release. It would be nice to harmonize with the mysterious atmosphere (characteristic of this band), and also with the above-mentioned, softer arrangements. The production does not help either - again too steriled. John's vocals and more exposed bass are good, unfortunately the guitars and the drums clearly lack heaviness and - on the other side - rottenness. As a result, a significant part of the music gives the impression that it's based on too similar patents.

 

As I mentioned, the slower and more atmospheric songs like "Incorporeal Dispear", "Visceral Hexahedron", "The Horns Of Gefrin" or "Messiah Nostrum" are the best, in which you can feel the spirit of the previous album the most, i.e. quite sensible a compromise between clarity and heavy sound. The rest of the ones that are not mentioned (apart from a completely unnecessary interlude closer to the end of the album) can also be liked, although the fact is that they feel slightly overworked by the formula and are much less brutal than those mentioned at the beginning of this paragraph. Another thing is that any of the Incantation albums with such an abundant discography must belong to the weakest ones. The choice fell on "Profane...", and only because of the high level after the two previous, excellent albums. Finally, I mentioned at the beginning that the "Profane Nexus" does not bring any shame to the band.
