Sadist - "Firescorched" (2022)

Najszybszy, wysoce eksperymentalny, najbardziej ekstremalny - takimi barwnymi określeniami zapowiadano "Firescorched", dziewiąty album włoskiego Sadist. Szybki wgląd na skład towarzyszący tej płycie i faktycznie, sformułowania tego kalibru nie wydają się być wziętymi totalnie z kosmosu. Na przestrzeni dwóch lat od wydania "Spellbound" i paru zmian personalnych, kapelę Tommy'ego Talamanci zasilili bowiem Jeroen Paul Thesseling oraz Romain Goulon - specjaliści w technicznym wymiataniu. No i nawet jeśli całość promocji płyty aż nadto podkoloryzowano (jak to zwykło już być przy nowszych wydawnictwach), podjarka (sic!) co do "Firescorched" nie była wcale taką bezpodstawną.

Nowy skład, hajs na klipy (za jeden odpowiada Grupa 13), dużo pokaźniejsza oferta co do merchu, całkiem solidny odzew ze strony metalowej społeczności w social mediach; wszystkie te rzeczy mniej lub bardziej mogły mieć - choć wcale nie musiały - swoje przełożenie na zawartość dziewiątego krążka Sadist. Szczęśliwie, mają, ale w granicach dobrego smaku. Na "Firescorched" kapela Tommy'ego Talamanci bowiem złapała wiatru w żagle przede wszystkim od strony muzycznej. Na tyle też, że wspomniana podjarka nie ustaje podczas wielokrotnego odsłuchu krążka.

Włosko-holendersko-francuski kwartet wyzbył się zatem zbędnego rozmiękczania z poprzednich dwóch krążków, a wszelki kicz - standardowo wyciskany z keyboarda - dużo sensowniej wplótł w progresywne (czy deathowe też!) struktury oraz orientalne klimaty. Poza tym, nie zaniechał oczywiście pomysłów na riffy (np. "Aggression Regression", "Fleshbound", "Finger Food", ale nie tylko), wyeksponowania partii bezprogowego basu (także z solówkami Jeroena, jak np. w genialnym "Accabadora") czy nawet takich szczegółów jak relaksacyjne instrumentale (tutaj "Loa"). Nowością na "Firescorched" są za to liczne elektroniczne wstawki (w stylu umpa-umpa) oraz...blasty. Oba te elementy jednak bardzo odświeżająco wpłynęły na muzykę, czego przykładem chociażby "Trauma (Impaired Mind Functionality)", tytułowy, "Three Mothers And The Old Devil Father" czy "Burial Of A Clown". Słowo jeszcze o nowym składzie. O ile partie Thesselinga wybijają się z całkiem sporym wyrafinowaniem (czyt. bez zbędnego szpanowania), o tyle pewne zastrzeżenia nasuwają się co do Goulona, którego gra w porównaniu do swojego poprzednika wypada mniej gęsto i zbyt mechanicznie jak na taką stylistkę. Może należałoby jeszcze podbrutalizować materiał? Bo właśnie w tych fragmentach Romain wykazuje największą pomysłowość i jeszcze bardziej podnosi poziom albumu.

Ogólnie rzecz biorąc, "Firescorched" to krążek, który faktycznie przynosi dla Sadist szereg sensownych zmian oraz pokrywa się z hucznymi, przedpremierowymi zapowiedziami - mimo że do selftajtla trochę mu brakuje. Po tylu latach grania, (pozmieniana) grupa Tommy'ego Talamanci pokazała bowiem, że nadal ma świeże pomysły na swoją muzykę i że doskonale wie jak podsycać info o ich nowszych wydawnictwach. W końcu, wielu podobnych stażem - skutecznie - praktykuje odwrotną taktykę.

The fastest, highly experimental, the most extreme - such colorful words were used to announce "Firescorched", the ninth album of Italian Sadist. A quick look at the composition accompanying this album and, in fact, the words of this caliber does not seem to be totally out of space. Two years after the release of "Spellbound" and a few personnel changes, the Tommy Talamanca's band was joined by Jeroen Paul Thesseling and Romain Goulon - specialists in their instruments. And even if the whole promotion of the album was colored too much (as it used to be with newer releases), excitement about "Firescorched" was not so unfounded. 

New line-up, money for videos (Group 13 is responsible for one), much more extensive merchandise offer, quite solid response from the metal community in social media; all these things could more or less have had - although they did not have to - come into the content of the ninth album Sadist. Happily, they do, but within the limits of good taste. On "Firescorched" the Tommy Talamanca's band put some fresh wind in their sails, mainly from the musical side. So much so that the above-mentioned excitement does not stop when listening to this disc repeatedly. 

Therefore, the Italian-Dutch-French quartet got rid of unnecessary softening from the previous two cds, and all the kitsch - usually pressed from a keyboard - was woven into progressive (and deathy!) structures and oriental climates much more sensibly. Besides, of course, they did not give up ideas for riffs (e.g. "Aggression Regression", "Fleshbound", "Finger Food", but not only), emphasizing the fretless bass parts (also with Jeroen's solos, like in the brilliant "Accabadora") or even details like relaxing instrumentals (here "Loa"). New patterns on "Firescorched" are numerous electronic inserts and...blast beats. Both these elements, however, had a very refreshing effect to the music, as exemplified by "Trauma (Impaired Mind Functionality)", the title track, "Three Mothers And The Old Devil Father" or "Burial Of A Clown". A word more about the new musicians. While the parts of Thesseling stand out with quite a lot of sophistication (i.e. without unnecessary showing off the technique), some reservations are to the Goulon drumming style, whose playing, compared to its predecessor, is less jazzy and too mechanical for such a style of Sadist. Perhaps the material should also be brutalized? Because in these fragments Romain shows the greatest ingenuity and it raises the level of this album even more. 

Overall, "Firescorched" is an album that does indeed bring a number of meaningful changes to Sadist and is in line with the boisterous pre-release announcements - even though it's not the same as "Sadist". After so many years of playing progressive death metal, the (rechanged) group of Tommy Talamanca showed that they still have fresh ideas for their music and that they know how to do good info about their newer releases. After all, many bands with similar experience practice the opposite tactic.
