Massacre - "Mythos" (2022)

Na fali przejęcia pałeczki w Massacre przez Kama Lee, Amerykanin ze swoją (nową) ekipą w rok po "Resurgance" uderzył z - jak mniemam - materiałem uzupełniającym tamto wydawnictwo, tj. epką "Mythos". No cóż, krążek z 2021 spotkał się - czego nie pojmuję - z mocno entuzjastycznym odbiorem, toteż dla podtrzymania hype'u z nim związanego sekstet postanowił kuć żelazo póki gorące, wydając kolejną porcję muzyki ściśle odwołującą się do najlepszych i najbardziej lubianych czasów, czyli według tego wcielenia zespołu: od demówek do "From Beyond". I co ciekawe, żadna z powyższych zapowiedzi nie okazała się podobną brednią na miarę hucznego powrotu związanego z "Resurgance". "Mythos" to wyraźnie inna partia kaloszy.

Przede wszystkim, te 4 kawałki mają dużo większy power niż większość "Resurgance"! Z tego względu, podtatusiowate granie poszło w odstawkę, a na jego miejscu zawitało...solidne odgrzewanie kotleta. Tym razem, ów odgrzewany kotlet jest jednak na tyle smaczny i odpowiednio przypieczony, że death metal w wykonaniu tego wcielenia Massacre nie wydaje się być czymś na siłę czy wyłącznie ukierunkowanym na tanie sentymenty. Przewaga "Mythos" nad "Resurgance" to: podkręcenie temp (w czym najbardziej przoduje oczywiście perkusista Brynjar Helgetun), więcej frombeyondowych zagrywek w wolniejszych fragmentach, mniej rutyniartswa z pod znaku Rogga Johansson, większy power od strony wokali Kama, bardziej wciągający klimat i większa dawka chwytliwości. Nic to oczywiście wybitnego jak na takich weteranów, aleee utworów z "Mythos" słucha się na luzie i potrafią one zatrzymać na parę dłuższych chwil, czego o zawartości "Resurgance" powiedzieć nie mogłem. "The Dunwich Horror", "The Mythos That Lovecraft Built", "The Thing On The Doorstep" oraz "Behind The Serpent's Curse" (tutaj udany duet wokalny Kama z Andersem Oddenem z Cadaver) to właśnie 4 przykłady pokazujące, że mimo niewielkiego wysiłku da się tworzyć porywającą muzykę, nie będącą kalką z przeszłości. Czemu więc cały "Resurgance" nie mógł tak zabrzmieć?

"Mythos" to zatem bardzo interesująca ciekawostka, zwłaszcza kiedy zdążyło się na Massacre położyć lachę (jak autor recki). Po tylu latach bowiem udało się stworzyć temu zespołowi sensowny, death metalowy materiał, który nie żeruje na własnej legendzie. Nie wyszło z tego wprawdzie również nic niezwykłego, ale rozczarowania na miarę poprzedniego albumu nie ma. No a to chyba najważniejsze przy takiej zapchajdziurze.

On the wave of taking over the Massacre by Kam Lee, the American with his (new) line-up a year after "Resurgance" struck with - I suppose - material supplementing that release, i.e. the ep "Mythos". Well, the album from 2021 met - which I do not understand - with a very enthusiastic reception, so to maintain the hype associated with it, the sextet decided to make hay while the sun shines, releasing another portion of music strictly referring to the best and most liked times, according to this incarnation of the band: from demos to "From Beyond". And what's interesting, none of these above announcements turned out to be a similar nonsense to the size of the return related to "Resurgance". "Mythos" is a different topic.

First of all, these 4 songs have a lot more power than most "Resurgance"! For this reason, the daddy death metal was put aside, and in its place was...a solid hoary old chestnut. This time, however, the hoary old chestnut is so tasty and properly seared that the death metal performed by this incarnation of Massacre does not seem to be something forceful or focused solely on cheap sentiments. The advantage of "Mythos" over "Resurgance" is: turning up the paces (whose brightest point is of course drummer Brynjar Helgetun), more "From Beyond"-like patterns in slower fragments, less routine a la projects of Rogga Johansson, more power from Kam's vocals, more engaging atmosphere and greater a dose of catchiness. Of course, this is nothing outstanding for such veterans, buuut songs from "Mythos" are listened to at ease and they can hold for a few longer moments, which I could not say about the content of "Resurgance". "The Dunwich Horror", "The Mythos That Lovecraft Built", "The Thing On The Doorstep" and "Behind The Serpent's Curse" (here the successful vocal duo of Kam with Anders Odden from Cadaver) are just 4 examples showing that despite little effort it's possible to create ravishing music that is not a copy of the past. So why couldn't the whole "Resurgance" sound like that?

"Mythos" is therefore a very interesting curiosity, especially when you gave up on Massacre (like the author of the review). After so many years, this band managed to create meaningful, death metal material that does not prey on its own legend. It did not come out of anything unusual either, but the disappointment of the previous album is not visible here. Well, and this is probably the most important with such a stop-gap.
