Dark Angel - "We Have Arrived" (1985)

Pada nazwa kultowego Dark Angel. Pierwsze co nasuwa się na myśl: "Darkness Descends", "Leave Scars" i ten album z 246 riffami! Obecnie tak to mniej więcej wygląda, gdy już wygrzebie się ich starocie z lamusa, a przecież grupa ta istniała od 1981 (do 1983 roku jako Shellschock), wydała kilka obiecujących demówek i w składzie Don Doty (wokal), Eric Meyer (gitara), Jim Durkin (gitara), Rob Yahn (bas) oraz James Schwartz (perkusja) jeszcze w 1985 roku zadebiutowała bardzo sensownym "We Have Arrived". Już wtedy ci Amerykanie pokazali się jako zespół o własnej tożsamości, obracający się w thrash metalowych brzmieniach po swojemu. No a że nie było to tak efektowne i urywające beret co później, to nie oznacza, że "We Have Arrived" zasługuje na zlekceważenie i zepchnięcie w siną dal ich dyskografii. Wszak powera, pomysłów i młodzieńczej werwy na debiucie Dark Angel znalazło się co niemiara.

Na etapie swojego pierwszego longplaya, ekipa Erica Meyera wycinała dość zadziorny thrash/speed, któremu nie brakuje heavy metalowej melodyki, galopad i chamskiego zdzierania gardła czy - po drugiej stronie - przebojowego śpiewu z okazjonalnymi falsetami, ale także sporej dawki techniki gitarowej (rzecz jasna pod kątem solówek) i zróżnicowanych struktur (bo o prostactwie nie ma tu mowy). Nie da się też tej muzyki jednoznacznie wcisnąć w ramy stylu stworzonego dwa lata wcześniej przez Slayera i Metallikę, ani też wpisać w dokładnie to samo granie co Demolition Hammer, Vio-lence czy Morbid Saint, które zadebiutowały dużo później. Nazwy to nieprzypadkowe, bo w pewnych kręgach mocno zestawiane z Dark Angel, ale nawet jeśli przyjąć taką teorię za słuszną, to Amerykanie z Kalifornii...i tak wyróżniają się osobnym feelingiem! Na "We Have Arrived" bowiem znakomicie wyważono melodykę, inspiracje heavy metalem, thrashowy pazur i młodzieńczy power. Wystarczy rzucić tytułami pokroju "No Tomorrow", "Merciless Death", tytułowy czy "Falling From The Sky". Okej, debiut Dark Angel nie jest tak odkrywczy co thrash metalowe klasyki z 1983, ale ten ogólny, dość chłodny stosunek do "We Have Arrived" bardziej wynika z tego, że zaledwie rok później Amerykanie dowalili do pieca grubo ponad normę!

"We Have Arrived" to zatem świetny przedsmak dyskografii Dark Angel. Już bowiem w 1985 roku znalazły się u nich patenty, które zagwarantowały im szerszy rozgłos i fakt, że z nazwą Dark Angel należy się liczyć. Na tamten czas Amerykanie wprawdzie jeszcze nie szokowali na równi z konkurencją, ale nie trzeba było długo czekać, by ta sytuacja uległa zmianie. Prawdziwy boom nastąpił u nich raptem rok później.

Example situation: the name of the iconic Dark Angel is mentioned. The first thing that comes to mind: "Darkness Descends", "Leave Scars" and this album with 246 riffs! Currently, this is more or less how it looks, when you remind their discography, and yet this group existed from 1981 (until 1983 as Shellschock), recorded several promising demos and included Don Doty (vocals), Eric Meyer (guitar), Jim Durkin (guitar), Rob Yahn (bass) and James Schwartz (drums) released their debut in 1985 by very sensible "We Have Arrived". Even then, these Americans showed themselves as a band with their own identity, revolving in thrash metal sounds in their own way. Well, it wasn't as effective and devastating as later, but it doesn't mean that "We Have Arrived" deserves to be disregarded and pushed into the last place of their discography. After all, there was plenty of power, ideas and youthful verve on Dark Angel's debut.

At the stage of their first longplay, Eric Meyer's band play quite feisty thrash/speed, which is not lacking in heavy metal melody, galloping and throat vocals or - on the other side - singing with occasional falsettos, but also a large dose of guitar technique (of course under in terms of solos) and varied structures. Also, this music cannot be unambiguously squeezed into the style created two years earlier by Slayer and Metallica, nor can it be included in exactly the same sound as Demolition Hammer, Vio-lence or Morbid Saint, which debuted much later. The names are not accidental, because in some groups they are strongly juxtaposed with Dark Angel, but even if we actually accept such a theory as correct, the Americans from California...still stand out with a separate feeling! On "We Have Arrived" the melodies, heavy metal inspirations, thrash metal sound and youthful power were perfectly balanced. Just listen to "No Tomorrow", "Merciless Death", the title track or "Falling From The Sky". Okay, Dark Angel's debut isn't as groundbreaking as the thrash metal classics from 1983, but this general, rather cold interest of "We Have Arrived" is more due to the fact that only a year later the Americans break this level beyond any standards!

"We Have Arrived" is therefore a great foretaste of Dark Angel's discography. Already in 1985, they had patents that guaranteed them wider publicity and the fact that the name Dark Angel should be reckoned with. At that time, the Americans were not as shocking as the competition, but it did not take long for this situation to change. The real boom came just a year later.
