Purtenance - "...To Spread The Flame Of Ancients" (2015)
Reaktywacja fińskiego Purtenance z początku nie wywołała jakichś większych emocji i umknęła sobie gdzieś bokiem. A szkoda, bo ich powrotny "Awaken From Slumber" to kawał rasowego, bardzo plugawego death metalu, który spokojnie dorównuje kultowemu "Member Of Immortal Damnation" i powinien mieć niezłe branie pośród spragnionych najbrzydszych odłamów ekstremy. Stało się niestety trochę inaczej, aczkolwiek nie było to nic co Finów szczególnie ruszyło i niedługo po premierze "Awaken...", w niezmiennym (nowym) składzie uderzyli oni z kolejnym, iście podziemnym wymiotem pod postacią trzeciego krążka. W 2015 roku ukazał się owy "...To Spread The Flame Of Ancients" potwierdzający, że za reunionem Purtenance - w przeciwieństwie do większości innych wracających zza grobu (sic!) - stały szczere intencje i wigor godny debiutantów.
Po zionącej oldschoolem okładce i bardzo dobrej zawartości poprzednika, w ciemno można było strzelać, że "...To Spread The Flame Of Ancients" będzie godnym rozwinięciem wcześniejszych patentów. No i strzał w ciemno bynajmniej z tego niechybiony! Okej, może nie jest to tak walący po gębie materiał co "Awaken...", bo mniej na nim ogólnie pojmowanej brzydoty (coś jak u późnego Grave), aleee mimo wszystko, dawką ciężaru, stęchlizny (sic!) i fińskiego chłodu "...To Spread" punktuje sobie bardzo zadowalająco. To podziemny death metal, który przede wszystkim ma przytłaczać obskurnym klimatem. Co ciekawe, na trójce znalazła się też pewna nowinka, która z perspektywy poprzednich nagrań może zaskakiwać. W paru fragmentach zespół bowiem pozwolił sobie poblastować szybciej niż...kiedykolwiek! Wiadomo, nie jest to też niczym co szczególnie wywraca styl Purtenance do góry nogami (bo kto przy zdrowych zmysłach tego wymagał?), aczkolwiek daje to naprawdę sporo frajdy, gdy w muzyce Finów (np. w takich numerach jak "Perventio", "I, The Sacrificed" czy "Destroyed Human Mind") wmieszano momenty bardzo intensywne do tych klimatycznych. Aż chciałoby się, by kwartet częściej tak zagęszczał ruchy. Reszta składowych w zasadzie nie odbiega od tego co już znane z krążka z 2012 roku. Ciężar sączy się hektolitrami, Ville wgniata growlingami (nawet bardziej niż poprzednio!), klimat trupa udziela się tu na każdym kroku, a od czasu do czasu zespół dla jeszcze większej duchoty dorzuca doomowym walcowaniem.
W ten sposób widać, że zapału i chęci do grania nie zabrakło Purtenance również przy okazji swojego drugiego, pełnego wydawnictwa od czasu reaktywacji. "...To Spread The Flame Of Ancients" to album dokładnie taki, jakiego należało oczekiwać po "Awaken From Slumber". Nieodkrywczy, ale popełniony z prawdziwej pasji i bez rozmieniania się na drobne.

The reactivation of the Finnish Purtenance did not cause any major emotions at the beginning of the reunion. It's a pity, because their return "Awaken From Slumber" is a piece of racial, very filthy death metal, which easily equals the cult "Member Of Immortal Damnation" and should have a good reception among those thirsty for the ugliest extremes. Unfortunately, it happened a little differently, although it was nothing that particularly moved the Finns and soon after the premiere of "Awaken...", in the unchanged (new) line-up, they hit with another, truly underground music in the form of the third album. In 2015, "...To Spread The Flame Of Ancients" was released, confirming that behind Purtenance's reunion - unlike most of the others coming back from the grave (sic!) - there were sincere intentions and vigor worthy of debutants.
After the oldschool cover art and the very good content of the predecessor, it was safe to assume that "...To Spread The Flame Of Ancients" will be a worthy continuation of earlier patents. And that's it! Okay, maybe it's not as punchy material as "Awaken...", because there's less generally understood ugliness on it (something like late Grave), but still, a dose of heaviness, mustiness (sic!) and Finnish coldness "...To Spread" scores very satisfactorily. This is underground death metal, which is primarily supposed to overwhelm with a dingy atmosphere. Interestingly, there is also a novelty on the "...To Spread", which may surprise from the perspective of previous recordings. Well, in a few fragments the band allowed to blast faster than...ever! Of course, it's also nothing that turns the Purtenance style drastically (because who would require that?), although it gives a lot of fun when in the music of the Finns (e.g. in such songs as "Perventio", "I, The Sacrificed" or "Destroyed Human Mind"), very intense moments were mixed into the climatic ones. I would like the quartet to brutalize its skills more often. The rest of the components basically do not differ from what is already known from the album from 2012. The heaviness spreads enormously, Ville's growls are even more crushing than before, the dead atmosphere is present here at every step, and from time to time the band adds doom patterns for even greater overwhelming.
In this way, you can see that Purtenance did not lack enthusiasm and willingness to play also on the occasion of its second full release since its reactivation. "...To Spread The Flame Of Ancients" is exactly what you'd expect after "Awaken From Slumber". Unrevealing album, but committed with real passion and without spreading oneself too thin.
