Kreator - "Extreme Aggression" (1989)

Zaskakujące, że tak prosta okładka stała się tak charakterystyczna. Ot co, obrazek z logówką zespołu i tytułem płyty, a obok foto ówczesnego składu na jaskrawo-czerwonym tle - jest w tym pewien urok, sami przyznacie. Co jednak ciekawsze i już związane stricte z muzyką, za historią powstania czwartego krążka Kreator pt. "Extreme Aggression" kryje się bardzo zbliżony scenariusz co do "Terrible Certainty" - ledwo Niemcy wydali premierowe utwory, to już lada chwila zaczęli intensywnie dłubać nad kolejnymi, mimo że omawiany krążek ukazał się 2 lata po poprzednim, bo w 1989 roku. Tym razem, jak wspominałem, zabrakło jakiegoś ewilowego malunku na froncie (mimo że go planowano, a samo foto kapeli, tak jak mówiłem, również się broni), ale nie przeszkodziło to w wydaniu następnej, wyśmienitej pozycji - "Extreme Aggression" właśnie. I skoro nazwano album ekstremalną agresją, to znaczy, że będziemy mieli tutaj do czynienia z najbrutalniejszą odsłoną tego zespołu...

...no nie do końca. W najprostszym ujęciu, "Extreme Aggression" kontynuuje styl z poprzedniego albumu. Nadal jest szybko, dosyć dziko i agresywnie, ale wyraźnie da się odczuć, że z nieco większą dbałością o technikę oraz bardziej klarowną produkcją. O jakimś totalnym, ekstremalnym wyziewie i silniej zaakcentowanej furii nie ma więc tu mowy - "Pleasure To Kill" nadal ma pod tym kątem przewagę. Mimo tego, takie bardziej kontrolowane podejście do grania thrashu sprawdza się na "Extreme..." wybornie (bo Niemcy nie poszli w stronę technicznego grania na całego), a sama agresja również oczywiście nie zeszła na bok. Weźmy za przykład "Extreme Aggressions" czy "Love Us Or Hate Us", które odznaczają się wysokim stężeniem thrashowej brutalności oraz imponującą dawką czadu. 

Reszta materiału jest już nieco bardziej poukładana, choć nie brak w pozostałych utworach pomysłów na riffy, ogólnej energii i sensownego rozwijania patentów z poprzednich płyt. Takie kawałki jak "No Reason To Exist", "Some Pain Will Last", "Betrayer" czy "Bringer Of Torture" nie porażają stopniem agresji bardziej niż to miało miejsce na "Terrible..." i "Pleasure...", ale świetnie utrzymują wcześniejszy poziom chwytliwości i ciężaru, a także - najzwyczajniej w świecie - słucha się ich z pełnym zaangażowaniem i kompletnie nie nudzą. Tak samo bardzo dobrze wypada wspominana przeze mnie większa dbałość instrumentalna, kompozytorska i produkcyjna - wszak nagrywali ten album w Stanach. Słychać, że Niemcy dokonali wiele starań, by nie dało się pomylić "Extreme..." z poprzednimi wydawnictwami. Melodie, rytmy, bardziej rozbudowane wstępy - te elementy tutaj bardzo fajnie dopieszczono. Identyczna sprawa wiąże się z wokalami. Bardzo dobrze, że całość krążka zdominowało wysokie i jadowite wypluwanie słów przez Mille.

Czyli, jak łatwo się domyśleć, "Extreme Aggression" to następny, bardzo ważny w kolejce klasyk Kreator, który ugruntował pozycję tegoż niemieckiego zespołu i pozwolił chłopakom na dalsze sukcesy. Bez odkrywania koła na nowo, czwarty album Millego i spółki przynosi zestaw świetnych, agresywnych i odpowiednio wyziewnych utworów, które wzorowo bazują na "Pleasure..." oraz "Terrible...", ale przy tym ukazują następny, wyraźny skok realizacyjny. Niemcom taki krok na przód wyszedł zupełnie naturalnie i bez spinania się, tak jak to zresztą Petrozza rzucił w "Love Us Or Hate Us" - we don't give a fuck anyway.

W ramach uzupełnienia warto jeszcze sięgnąć po epkę poprzedzającą wydanie "Extreme Aggression" - "Out Of The Dark...Into The Light". Znaleźć można na niej autorski "Impossible To Cure" oraz cover heavy metalowego Raven "Lambs To The Slaughter" dość sensownie zapowiadające nadchodzący, bardziej poukładany kierunek młócenia thrashu, a także 3 live'y ("Terrible Certainty", "Riot Of Violence" i "Awakening Of The Gods") z ówcześnie promowanego "Terrible Certainty". Dla fanów mus.

It's surprising that such a simple cover art became so iconic. That's it, a picture with the band's logo and the title of the album, and next to it a photo of the then line-up on a bright red background - there is a certain awesomeness in it, you admit. However, what is more interesting and strictly related to music is the history behind the recording of the "Extreme Aggression" has a very similar scenario to "Terrible Certainty" - as soon as the Germans released their premiere songs, they immediately started working on the next ones, even though the album was released 2 years after the previous one, in 1989. This time, as I mentioned, there was no evil-like cover art on the front (even though it was planned, and the photo of the band itself, as I said, is also really great), but it did not prevent the release of the next, excellent release - "Extreme Aggression". And since the album was called extreme aggression, it means that we will get here the most brutal version of this band...

...well, not really. In its simplest terms, "Extreme Aggression" continues the style of the previous album. It's still fast, quite wild and aggressive, but you can clearly feel that with a bit more attention to technique and clearer production. So there is no total, extreme brutality and more accentuated fury - "Pleasure To Kill" still has the advantage in this respect. Despite this, this more controlled approach to playing thrash metal works great on "Extreme..." (because the Germans didn't go for full-on technical styles), and of course the aggression itself didn't go away either. Take for example "Extreme Aggressions" or "Love Us Or Hate Us", which are characterized by a high concentration of thrash brutality and an impressive dose of energy.

The rest of the material is a bit more organized, although the remaining songs do not lack ideas for riffs, general energy and sensible development of patterns from previous albums. Songs such as "No Reason To Exist", "Some Pain Will Last", "Betrayer" or "Bringer Of Torture" are not more aggressive than "Terrible..." and "Pleasure..." songs, but they maintain the previous level of catchiness and heaviness very well, and - quite simply - they are listened to with full commitment and are not boring at all. Equally, the better instrumental, compositional and production care that I mentioned is very good - after all, they recorded this album in the USA. You can hear that the Germans have made a lot of effort to ensure that "Extreme..." cannot be confused with their previous releases. Melodies, rhythms, more extensive introductions - these elements have definitely been very nicely refined here. The same thing applies to vocals. It's very good that the entire album was dominated by high and venomous spitting the words by Mille.

So, as you can easily guess, "Extreme Aggression" is the next, very important Kreator classic, which consolidated the position of this German band and allowed the boys to achieve further successes. Without reinventing anything, the fourth album by Mille & co. brings a set of great, aggressive and appropriately thrash metal songs that are exemplarily based on "Pleasure..." and "Terrible...", but at the same time show another, clear progress in production. For the Germans, such a step forward came completely naturally and without forcing, just as Petrozza said in "Love Us Or Hate Us" - we don't give a fuck anyway.

You can find there the original "Impossible To Cure" and a cover of the heavy metal Raven "Lambs To The Slaughter", quite sensibly announcing the upcoming, more organized direction of Kreator's thrash metal, as well as 3 live songs ("Terrible Certainty", "Riot Of Violence" and "Awakening Of The Gods") from the then promoted "Terrible Certainty". A must-have for fans.
