The Antichrist Imperium - "Volume III: Satan In His Original Glory" (2022)

U mnie to wiecie jak wygląda sytuacja z brzmieniami pod Akercocke - jestem na nie łasy jak patologia na 800+. Co więcej, w dzisiejszym temacie jest jeszcze ta fajna okoliczność, że "Volume II: Every Tongue Shall Praise Satan" odpokutował grzeszki debiutu, dlatego też następnego wydawnictwa The Antichrist Imperium wręcz niecierpliwie wyczekiwałem, będąc ciekawym czy podtrzymają wcześniejszy, wysoki poziom. Na tę odpowiedź trzeba było poczekać do 2022 roku, czyli raczej bez przeciągania i całkiem sprawnie, gdy ukazał się trzeci pełniak tychże elegancików - "Volume III: Satan In His Original Glory". Jak najbardziej było jednak warto czekać na ich wypociny, gdyż kwartet podołał (moim) oczekiwaniom, a także nie zamierzał się powtarzać, ponownie podążył odmienną ścieżką na tle Voices oraz nagrał jeszcze ciekawszy materiał niż wcześniej.

Słychać, że za "Volume III: Satan In His Original Glory" stoją, po prostu, doświadczeni i w pełni konsekwentni goście, którzy z nie jednego garnka jedli i pojęcie o wykonywanej robocie wyrobili sobie na przestrzeni lat. Na trójce nie ma miejsca na żadne przypadkowe dźwięki czy kompozytorskie niezdecydowanie, a co za tym idzie, z krążka błyskawicznie do uszu docierają dobre pomysły na utwory oraz zaskakująca dojrzałość tych brzmień. I nie, nie chodzi o tą stypiarską lub dziaderską dojrzałość. Mam na myśli, że na "Volume III" kwartet wyrobił się do tego stopnia, że są oni pewni tegoż garniturowo-szatanującego stylu, poruszają się w nim naturalnie, nie powielają bezmyślnie innej, wiadomej kapeli (poza jedną małą uwagą, o której niżej) i nie boją się wyskakiwać z elementami, które wykraczają ponad death metalową brutalność oraz black metalową wyziewność. 

Na trójce jest więc odpowiedni ciężar, wyszukane melodie, intensywne blastowanie, sensowna progresja, świetnie wyważone (czyt. bez obciachu i z głową wykorzystane) czyste wokalizy oraz płynnie przechodzące między sobą (i przez to niemęczące) kontrasty. Ponadto, bardzo robią mi tu wszelkie wstawki na czysto, klimat jaki wydzielany jest z riffów (zarówno ten z diabłem, jak i melancholijny), przebieranie paluchami po gryfie (o bezsensownych sweepach można zapomnieć), okazjonalne, kojące momenty czy rozbudowane struktury utworów. Aha, kolejna ważna rzecz - produkcja garów poszła na przód, przez co nie brzmią one tak plastikowo jak poprzednim razem. 

Że jest cacy, co raczej nie powinno nikogo dziwić, potwierdzają chociażby "Third Degree Baptism", "Exorcist Evisceration", "The Sweetest Juice" (walcowata końcówka zalatuje środkowym Behemoth!), "Menage A Triumvirate" czy "Chapel Of The Crippled Seed", które pomimo sporej rozpiętości, zachodzą w pamięć i nie brak im chwytliwości, a przy tym wiedzą jak gospodarować progresją, by nie zatracać smoły i brutalności. Fakt, zanikły gdzieś w tym wszystkim wcześniejsze, thrashowe patenty gitarowe, a niekiedy The Antichrist Imperium bywają zbyt bliscy Akercocke (zwłaszcza w łagodnych fragmentach mam wrażenie jakbym słuchał...po prostu Akercocke), aczkolwiek nie jest to jakieś uciążliwe, gdyż prog-death-blackowa strona wypada na tyle atrakcyjnie, że nie czuć strat, gdy pojawia się coś (zbyt) bliskiego ekipy pana Mendonçy. Wspominałem w końcu, że "Volume III" jest ciekawszy od swoich poprzedników - więcej na nim detali, gwałtownych zmian, bardziej różnorodnych wokali oraz zaczepnych riffów czy refleksyjnych klimacików.

Tym sposobem, "Volume III: Satan In His Original Glory" to kolejna z około-akercockowych pozycji godnych polecenia, gdy zbyt mało komukolwiek wyjściowej kapeli. Podobnie jak wcześniej, kwartet z The Antichrist Imperium wyciągnął ze znanego stylu świeżą oraz obfitą w niegłupie pomysły formułę na garniturowo-satanistyczny metal. Czasem nawet będąc bliżej esencji Akercocke niż sam Akercocke na krążku z 2017 roku.

For me, you know how it's with Akercocke-like sounds - I am as greedy for them as pathology is for social support. What's more, in today's topic there is also this nice circumstance that "Volume II: Every Tongue Shall Praise Satan" atoned for the sins of the debut, which is why I was waiting impatiently for the next release of The Antichrist Imperium, wondering if they would maintain the previous, high level. We had to wait for this answer until 2022, i.e. rather quite efficiently, when the third full-length of these elegant gentlemen was released - "Volume III: Satan In His Original Glory". However, it was definitely worth waiting for their work, because the quartet lived up to (my) expectations, and also did not intend to repeat themselves, once again followed a different path compared to the Voices and recorded even more interesting material than before.

You can hear that "Volume III: Satan In His Original Glory" is simply made up of experienced and fully consistent guys who have developed an understanding of the job they do over the years. There is no place for random sounds or compositional indecision on this album, and as a result, good ideas for songs and a surprising maturity of these sounds reach the ears from the album very quickly. And no, I'm not talking about this old-fashioned or old-timer maturity. I mean that on "Volume III" the quartet has developed to such an extent that they are certain of this chic-satanic style, they move naturally in it, they do not mindlessly copy another, well-known band (apart from one small remark, which I will discuss below) and they are not afraid to go into the elements that go beyond death metal brutality and black metal roughness.

On their third album there is the right heaviness, sophisticated melodies, intense blasting, sensible progression, perfectly balanced (i.e. used without embarrassment and wisely) clean vocals and smoothly changing (and therefore not tiring) contrasts. In addition, all the clean inserts do a lot for me here, the atmosphere that is given off from the riffs (both the one with the evilness and the melancholic one), technical patterns (you can forget about senseless sweep picking), occasional, soothing moments or extended song structures. And one more important thing, drums have moved forward, so they do not sound as plastic as last time. 

The above words are confirmed by "Third Degree Baptism", "Exorcist Evisceration", "The Sweetest Juice" (the slower parts at the end is reminiscent of the mid Behemoth!), "Menage A Triumvirate" or "Chapel Of The Crippled Seed", which, despite their considerable range, are memorable and do not lack catchiness, and at the same time know how to manage progression so as not to lose heaviness and brutality. It's true that the earlier, thrash guitar patterns have disappeared somewhere in all this, and sometimes The Antichrist Imperium are too close to Akercocke (especially in the lighter fragments I feel as if I was listening to...simply Akercocke), although it's not bothersome, because the prog-death-black side is so attractive that you don't feel the loss when something (too) close to Mendonça's band appears. Finally, I mentioned that "Volume III" is more interesting than its predecessors - there are more details, sudden changes, more diverse vocals, as well as catchy riffs and reflective atmosphere.

In this way, "Volume III: Satan In His Original Glory" is another of the Akercocke-related releases worth recommending when someone is too tired of the well-known band. To a similar extent as before, the quartet from The Antichrist Imperium pulled out of a known style a fresh and full of ideas formula for suit-satanic metal. Sometimes even being closer to the essence of Akercocke than Akercocke itself on the 2017 album.
