Dan Swanö - "Moontower" (1998)

Biorąc pod uwagę mocno rozczarowującą zawartość "Infernal" i coraz to większe ciągoty w prog metalowe rejony ze strony ex-lidera Edge Of Sanity, spodziewałem się po "Moontower" totalnych smętów i typowego przerostu nad treścią. Otóż nic z tych rzeczy! Solowy krążek Dana Swanö to zupełnie inna płyta niż początkowo przypuszczałem, absolutnie zaskakująca i genialna w każdym calu! Największa strata, że nie ukazała się pod szyldem wiadomej kapeli, ale to już największy ból dla pozostałych członków Edge Of Sanity. Bo mogli się podpisać pod jednym z najlepszych krążków ze Szwecji, który tak perfekcyjnie połączył prog rock i death metal! 

Na tym etapie, Dana interesowało większe zgłębianie się w pierwszy z wymienionych gatunków, ale nie znaczy to, że drugi z nich pozostał totalnie w cieniu. To co death metalowe, na "Moontower" objawia się od strony growlingów (taa wiem, że dużo) i co najciekawsze, to właśnie ten typ wokalu zdominował cały album (czysty śpiew pojawia się jedynie w "The Big Sleep" i "Add Reality"). Słuchając tej płyty nie ma się jednak wrażenia, że Swanö przedobrzył z inspirowaniem się prog rockiem. Całość "Moontower" jest wyraźnie lżejsza od poprzednich dokonań Edge Of Sanity, ale absolutnie nie ustępuje im poziomem - część nawet przewyższa. Na pierwszy plan często wysuwają się tu klawisze a la Amorphis (ewentualnie retro-hammondy), niespecjalnie ciężkie riffy, sporo melodii i akustyków oraz klimat przywodzący na myśl - a jakże! - prog rockowe kapele z lat 70-tych. Słychać też, że to płyta wyraźnie skierowana do fanów Edge Of Sanity, którym nie podpasował "Cryptic" - to jeszcze ciekawsza pozycja nawet na tle samego  "Crimson"!  

Rozwój jest więc olbrzymi, ale jak najbardziej ma sens. Na "Moontower" przede wszystkim urzeka lekkość tej mieszanki gatunkowej, że to wszystko Danowi tak po prostu swobodnie wypłynęło na tę płytę, że wyraźnie wnosi nową jakość na tle albumów Edge Of Sanity, że duża ilość death metalowego grania wcale nie była tutaj potrzebna. Ba, Szwed nawet świetnie się wybronił na licznym wykorzystaniu klawiszy (co u takiego Amorphis potrafiło popadać w kicz)! Przykłady? No chociażby "Encounterparts", "Sun Of The Night" albo "Creating Illusions" - keyboardy dodają im wręcz dodatkowego wymiaru. Kolejna ważna sprawa to mnóstwo kapitalnych melodii i jak zwykle świetnych wokali Swanö, ale tak po prawdzie, to nie muszę się tu specjalnie o tym rozpisywać, wszak Dan Swanö od zawsze miał do tego talent.

Spośród płyt łączących prog rock i death metal, "Moontower" jest więc jednym z wzorcowych wydawnictw jak powinno się ze sobą łączyć obie te stylistyki. To idealny przykład płyty, gdzie progresja gra pierwsze skrzypce w muzyce, a mimo to, nie odbiera ona jej nic z charakteru czy piosenkowości. No i to zdecydowanie lepsza pozycja na tle wydawnictwa Edge Of Sanity bez Swanö.

Considering the very disappointing content of "Infernal" and the increasing tendency to the prog metal patterns on the part of the ex-leader of Edge Of Sanity, I expected "Moontower" to be totally unclear and a typical excess of the content. Well, none of these things! Dan Swanö's solo album is a completely different album than I initially thought, absolutely surprising and brilliant in every way! The biggest loss is that it did not appear under the name of the known band, but it's the biggest pain for the other members of Edge Of Sanity. Because they could be on one of the best albums from Sweden, which combined prog rock and death metal so perfectly! 

At this point, Dan was interested in delving deeper into the prog rock, but that does not mean that the latter was totally somwhere in the back. What death metal on "Moontower" reveals, the growling side (yeah, I know a lot) and most interestingly, this type of vocal dominated the entire album (clean singing appears only in "The Big Sleep" and "Add Reality"). Listening to this album, however, you do not have the impression that Swanö has overdone with prog rock inspiration. The whole "Moontower" is clearly lighter than the previous cds of Edge Of Sanity, but absolutely not inferior to them in terms of level - some even surpass. On "Moontower" often come to the fore: keyboards a la Amorphis (or retro-hammonds), not particularly heavy riffs, a lot of melodies and acoustics and a climate reminiscent of - surely! - prog rock bands from the 70's. You can also hear that this is an album clearly aimed at fans of Edge Of Sanity, who did not like "Cryptic" - it's even more interesting cd even compared to "Crimson" itself! 

So the development is huge, but it makes perfect sense. On "Moontower", the lightness of this genre mix is ​​enchanting, that it all flowed so freely to Dan on this album, that it clearly brings a new quality to the Edge Of Sanity albums, that a large amount of death metal music was not needed here. Well, the Swede even did a great job on the numerous use of the keyboards (which in such Amorphis could fall into daub)! Examples? Well, "Encounterparts", "Sun Of The Night" or "Creating Illusions" - keyboards give them even an extra dimension. Another important thing is a lot of great melodies and, as usual, great Swanö's vocals, but to be honest, I don't need to write much about it here, after all, Dan Swanö has always had a talent for it. 

From among albums combining prog rock and death metal, "Moontower" is one of the model releases as it should be combined with each other. This is a perfect example of an album where progression is important in music, but yet it does not take anything away from its character or catchiness. And it's definitely a better position compared to Edge Of Sanity without Swanö.
