Exivious - "Chrysalis - The Early Demos" (2017)

Wielu lubujących się w graniu a la Cynic - w tym mnie - musiało się poczuć zdruzgotanym, gdy w necie padła informacja o rozpadzie Exivious. Niestety, holenderska grupa ową decyzję podjęła dość spontanicznie (przynajmniej takie wrażenie to sprawia), w 3 lata po premierze znakomitego "Liminal" - co by wydawało się, że panowie sklecą jego następcę aniżeli posuną się do czegoś takiego. Stało się tak a nie inaczej, ale żeby jednak nie odchodzić ze zbyt skromnym dorobkiem (który...i tak jest zbyt skromny!), postanowili oni zwieńczyć swoją działalność kompilacją nagrań sprzed "Exivious" - w tym paru niewydanych wcześniej na oficjalu. Czyli właśnie omawianym "Chrysalis - The Early Demos".

W ten oto sposób można prześledzić historię Exivious niemal od samego początku (zabrakło jedynie singla z 1999 roku - "Patterns Of Life"), no i przekonać się, że już od najwcześniejszych nagrań z 2001 Holendrzy wiedzieli jak tworzyć w stylu Cynic, a przy tym jak robić to ze smakiem i po swojemu. Owe "Demo 2001" to także niespodzianka pod tym względem, że są na nim wokale - później już z nich zrezygnowano. No i podobnie jak na "Focus", występuje tu vocoderowy śpiew (w wykonaniu Jana Henningheima) oraz schuldinerowy skrzek (za który odpowiada Tymon Kruidenier), świetnie odzwierciedlając futurystyczny klimat death metalowego grania. Nagrania od "Shapeless Thoughts" do "Without Your Name" stanowią za to początek porzucenia wokali w Exivious. Różnice w nich to przede wszystkim nieco "cieplejszy" klimat (za wyjątkiem tajemniczego "Without Your Name") oraz trochę większy stopień zakręcenia. Na sam koniec "Chrysalis..." pozostał jednak największy rarytas tego wydawnictwa. "Half-Life" oraz "Transcendence" bowiem pochodzą z pierwotnie niewydanego dema z 2003 roku, a prezentują naprawdę wysoki poziom i mocniej kombinują z techniką niż poprzednie kawałki. Słucha się też tego ogólnie na tyle świetnie, że nawet na demach 2002 i 2003 nie przeszkadza zastosowanie automatu perkusyjnego oraz dużych ilości klawiszowych dodatków (niestety trochę trącających myszką).

Na zakończenie kariery Exivious, Holendrzy wybronili się naprawdę fajnie wydając składaka "z wczesnych lat". Dostęp stał się do tych nagrań łatwiejszy, fani mogą prześledzić historię tego wydawnictwa dokładniej, a i samego materiału słucha się na miarę pełnej płyty. Szkoda tylko, że ekipa Tymona Kruideniera tak szybko postanowiła zakończyć działalność.

Many who liked style a la Cynic - including me - must have felt devastated when information about the break-up of Exivious was on the Internet. Unfortunately, the Dutch group made this decision quite spontaneously (at least this is the impression it makes), three years after the premiere of the excellent "Liminal" - which would seem that the band would assemble their successor rather than go to something like that. It happened so and not otherwise, but in order not to leave with too modest discography (which...is too modest anyway!), they decided to finish their activity with a compilation of recordings from before "Exivious" - including a few previously unreleased. So this is the discussed "Chrysalis - The Early Demos". 

This way you can trace the history of Exivious almost from the very beginning (only the single from 1999 - "Patterns Of Life" - was missing), and see that from the earliest recordings from 2001, the Dutch knew how to create Cynic style, and at the same time do it with taste and in their own way. "Demo 2001" is also a surprise in the sense that there are vocals on it - later they were abandoned. And, similarly to "Focus", there is a vocoder singing (performed by Jan Henningheim) and a Schuldinner-like vocals (by Tymon Kruidenier), perfectly reflecting the futuristic atmosphere of technical death metal. The recordings from "Shapeless Thoughts" to "Without Your Name" mark the beginning of the vocal abandonment in Exivious. The differences in them are mainly a bit "warmer" climate (except for the mysterious "Without Your Name") and a slightly greater degree of technique. At the very end, "Chrysalis..." has the greatest rarity of this release. "Half-Life" and "Transcendence" come from the originally unreleased demo from 2003, and they present a really high level and combine more with the technique than the previous songs. It's also generally listened to so well that even on the 2002 and 2003 demos, the use of a drum programming and large amounts of keyboard add-ons (unfortunately, with a bit old sounding) does not bother. 

At the end of Exivious's career, the Dutch defended themselves really nicely by releasing the early years compilation. Access to these recordings has become easier, fans can follow the history of this release more closely, and the material itself is listened to as full-length as possible. It's a pity that the band of Tymon Kruidenier decided to end their activity so quickly.
