Pharmacist - "Medical Renditions Of Grinding Decomposition" (2020)

Mniej typowy goregrind zawsze w cenie! A już zwłaszcza, gdy do recenzowania wlatuje wydawnictwo hołdujące Carcass z dość różnych okresów - zarówno najstarszych, jak i nieco późniejszych. Przykładem jest właśnie ukraińsko-japoński (?) projekt Pharmacist, którego debiutancki "Medical Renditions Of Grinding Decomposition" wyrasta ponad przeciętną, nadaje się na dłuższe posiedzenia, a ze względu na umiejętne kombinowanie (o którym szerzej zaraz), może on, czy nawet musi, przypasować sympatykom różnych, nietypowych połączeń, które w teorii mogłyby nie działać, a w praktyce znajdują wspólny mianownik.

Na "Medical Renditions Of Grinding Decomposition" trafiły więc brzmienia umiejscowione w ekstremum i brzydocie "Symphonies Of Sickness", a zarazem niestroniące od ciężaru i precyzji "Necroticism" oraz melodyki i kunsztu "Heartwork". Co do tego ostatniego - bez obaw. Debiut Pharmacist z początku prezentuje się dość ekstrawagancko, choć nie na tyle pokrętnie, by dało się "Medical..." uznać za materiał polepiony przypadkowo bez ładu i składu. Pomost pomiędzy selektywnością a zasyfieniem został tutaj odpowiednio wypośrodkowany - tak, by było odrażająco i wściekle, ale czytelnie, soczyście i chwytliwie. Z tego względu, dostajemy tu konkretny cios w pysk mogący bardzo dobrze odzwierciedlać sytuację krążka pomieszanego pomiędzy "Symphonies..." a "Necroticism" z intrygującym i dobrze ułożonym dodatkiem "Heartwork" oraz okazjonalnego, thrashowego riffowania. 

Z muzyki bucha więc podobnie brytolski ciężar, dynamika, nekro-klimat i dwa patologicznie brzmiące wokale (jeden w typie Jeff Walker, drugi à la jeszcze bardziej bulgoczący Bill Steer), a po przeciwnej stronie, zadziorne, heartworkowe bujanie, galopady oraz heavy metalowy charakter gitar. Jak wypada to w samych utworach? A no bardzo fajnie, bo np. takie "Decrepit Peristaltica", "Cadaveric Osseous Stalactite", "Eulogy Of Pathological Surgery", "Fumes Of Exhumation" czy "Gardening On Human Soils" świetnie ukazują, że tego typu mieszanka może wypływać naturalnie i zawierać większy sens, zwłaszcza gdy melodyjność i luz nie wychodzi na pierwszy plan względem brutalności i dużej ilości dołów. No właśnie, trzeba pamiętać, że debiut Pharmacist w przeważającej części stawia na krwistą i odrażającą mielonkę, bez względu na kilka mniej patologicznych rozwiązań w tym stylu. Defekty, ekhm, znaczy się, minusy? Kompletnie nie robią mi tu na pewno gary i ich automatowy charakter (posłuchajcie jak kwadratowo wystukiwane są blasty - aż się można wzdrygnąć), a także zdecydowanie lepszym pomysłem byłoby poskracanie niektórych utworów - zwłaszcza tam, gdzie przenikają się zbliżone rytmicznie motywy. Być może wtedy, "Medical Renditions Of Grinding Decomposition" wywierałby jeszcze lepsze wrażenie.

Całościowo, debiutancki long Pharmacist to bardzo dobre i intrygujące wydawnictwo. Dzięki niemu widać, że w goregrindowym nurcie nie powiedziano jeszcze wszystkiego, a jednocześnie, że da się przy takim podejściu uchwycić brzydotę znaną ze starszych, klasycznych płyt. Jedyne co w przypadku "Medical Renditions Of Grinding Decomposition" mierzi to okazjonalne dłużyzny i syntetyczna perka. Bez tych uszczerbków byłoby wspaniale, tak jest tylko (lub aż) bardzo dobrze.

Less typical goregrind is always desirable! Especially when it comes to reviewing an album that pays homage to Carcass from quite different periods - both the oldest and slightly later ones. An example is the Ukrainian-Japanese (?) project Pharmacist, whose debut "Medical Renditions Of Grinding Decomposition" is above average, suitable for longer sessions and due to different combinations (more about it later), it can, or even must, be liked by listeners of various, unusual styles that in theory might not work, but in practice find the golden mean.

"Medical Renditions Of Grinding Decomposition" includes sounds placed in the extreme and ugliness of "Symphonies Of Sickness", and at the same time the heaviness and precision of "Necroticism" and the melody and artistry of "Heartwork". As for the latter - no worries. Pharmacist's debut looks quite extravagant at the beginning, although not so twisted that "Medical..." can be considered as material composed randomly and without ideas. The bridge between selectivity and roughness has been appropriately balanced here - so that it's disgusting and wild, but readable, fleshy and catchy. For this reason, we get a real punch in the face here, which could very well reflect the situation of the album mixed between "Symphonies..." and "Necroticism" with the intriguing and well-arranged addition of "Heartwork" and occasional thrash metal riffing.

The music bursts with Carcass-like heaviness, dynamics, necro-climate and two pathological-sounding vocals (one like Jeff Walker, the other à la the even more guttural Bill Steer), and on the other side, coarse, heavy metal feeling and gallops. How does it compare to the songs themselves? And it's very nice, because e.g. "Decrepit Peristaltica", "Cadaveric Osseous Stalactite", "Eulogy Of Pathological Surgery", "Fumes Of Exhumation" or "Gardening On Human Soils" perfectly show that this type of mixture can function naturally and contain more meaning, especially when melody and ease do not come to the fore compared to brutality and ugliness. Well, you have to remember that Pharmacist's debut mainly focuses on bloody and disgusting goregrind, regardless of a few less pathological solutions in this style. Defects, ahem, I mean, minuses? The drums and their automatic character definitely bother me a lot (listen to how bad blast beats sound - it may disgust you), and it would be a much better idea to shorten some of the songs - especially where rhythmically similar motifs intertwine. Perhaps then, "Medical Renditions Of Grinding Decomposition" would have made an even better impression.

Overall, the debut album by Pharmacist is a very good and intriguing release. By this release, you can see that not everything has been said yet in the goregrind and at the same time, that with this approach it is possible to conclude the ugliness and severity known from older, classic albums. The only thing that bothers me about "Medical Renditions Of Grinding Decomposition" is the occasional too long songs and synthetic drums. Without these defects it would be great, it's only (or even) very good.
