Pandemic Outbreak - "Torment Beyond Comprehension" (2025)

Trochę wody w Wiśle upłynęło zanim ukazał się następca "Skulls Beneath The Cross", ale jeszcze nastąpiło to bez przeginki - w 4 lata. Przez ten czas Pandemic Outbreak rozrósł się do aktywnie działającego zespołu, wydano koncertówkę i powstawał materiał na kolejny longplay, mimo że nie obyło się bez zawirowań personalnych. Z pewnością, to ostatnie miało kluczowy wpływ na opóźnienia, ale gdy finalnie skład zespołu ustabilizował się oraz zasilił go nowy gitarniak i perkman, można było wreszcie wypuścić w 2025 roku drugi album - nawet jeśli ten drugi dołączył po sesji nagraniowej, a partie perkusyjne nagrywał kto inny. Kurz oczekiwań związanych z "Torment Beyond Comprehension" opadł (w grupkach gdzie go wyczekiwano najbardziej) i szybko o proste wnioski, że faktycznie było na co czekać po poprzedniej płycie.

O ile debiut bardzo silnie odwoływał się do wczesnego vaderowania, tak "Torment Beyond Comprehension" odchodzi od tamtej estetyki i odbija w cywilizowane (?) i całkiem przebojowe rejony death/thrashu. Nie da się nie zauważyć przeskoku produkcyjnego, większej dbałości o detale i precyzję, czytelniejszego growlu oraz przesiąknięcia patentami Death (po trochu z "Human" i "Symbolic") i Blood Incantation (melodyka "Starspawn"). Fascynacje Sepulturą z albumów 2-4 również są obecne, choć te najczęściej się odzywają, gdy grupa zasuwa sprinterskie tempa. Jest mniej ekstremalnie i dzikość zawędrowała na sam koniec muzyki Pandemic Outbreak, aczkolwiek... to nic co stawia krążek w złym świetle. Nowy kierunek oceniam generalnie pozytywnie, bo poszło za nim większe dopracowanie i zróżnicowanie kompozycji, fajne bujnięcie przez całość materiału oraz kilka haczyków, które sprawiają, że utwory nie lecą na jedno kopyto. Zresztą, to nie tak, że Pandemic Outbreak nagle zaczęli grać ckliwe piosenki - poszli w death/thrash w bardziej wysublimowanej i dojrzalszej formie.

No właśnie, a skoro mowa o utworach. Wszystkie z nich trzymają wysoki poziom, ale na mnie największe wrażenie zrobiły kawałki, których głównym celem jest koncertowe miażdżenie, czyli "Consumed By Flames" (ten nagły break z 3:10 wyrywa z kapci), "Left For Vultures" i "Tales Of The Slaughter" (remake utworu z epki "Collecting The Trophies", ale idealnie dopasowany do płyty). Podobnie dużo dobrego jeszcze nasuwa "Skinned While Breathing", który zalicza się do kategorii walców, aczkolwiek w nim grupa Menzela barrrdzo blisko zbliża się do "God Of Emptiness" - brakuje tylko hucznego lies! na początku kawałka. Dla jednych to będzie już rzecz zbyt mocno naznaczona Morbid Angel, dla mnie fajna pula nawiązywania do amerykańskiego klasyka. Pozostałe utwory również są niczego sobie, a że zespół dalej jeńców nie bierze i potrafi staroszkolnie zasuwać dowodzą "Beyond My Comprehension" i "Impaled", natomiast w "Ripped Into Pieces" zespół nawet do death/thrashowego młócenia wpuszcza progresywną wstawkę, w której pobrzmiewa kosmiczny duch Cynic i Pestilence.

"Torment Beyond Comprehension" to kawał dobrego, death/thrashowego rzemiosła, dalekiemu jeszcze do wybitności, ale niepozbawionego pomysłowości i dającego frajdę z rozpracowywania jego części. Można się czepiać, że jest tu czasem zbyt metallikowo w partiach solowych, nieco sterylnie, mniej agresywnie niż na debiucie, a Krzysztof Klingbein w roli sesyjnego perkusisty mógł zagrać zdecydowanie gęściej (być może dostał wytyczne, żeby nie szaleć), ale w zamian zespół proponuje niemało klimatycznych partii i instrumentalnej błyskotliwości, które wynagradzają tamte minusy. Jak zazwyczaj zwrot w kierunku łagodzenia i wyjścia do ludzi niezbyt mnie przekonuje w ekstremalnej muzyce, tak na "Torment..." działa to zaskakująco dobrze i odkrywa więcej warstw death/thrashu niż na poprzednich materiałach tej gdańskiej ekipy.

It took a while for the follow-up to "Skulls Beneath The Cross" to be released, but it happened without major problems - in four years. During that time, Pandemic Outbreak grew into an active band, released a live album, and wrote material for a follow-up album, despite some line-up disruptions. This last factor certainly contributed to the delays, but once the band finally stabilized and a new guitarist and drummer joined, they were finally able to release their second album in 2025 - even if the latter joined after the recording sessions and the drums were handled by someone else. The dust of anticipation surrounding "Torment Beyond Comprehension" settled (in the groups most eagerly awaited), and the simple conclusion quickly emerged: there was indeed something to look forward to after the previous album.

While the debut strongly referenced to early Vader, "Torment Beyond Comprehension" departs from that aesthetic and veers into the more civilized (?) and quite catchy areas of death/thrash. It's impossible not to notice the leap in production, the greater attention to detail and precision, the clearer growl, and the infusion of Death influences (a bit from "Human" and "Symbolic") and Blood Incantation (the melodies from "Starspawn"). The Sepultura influences from albums 2-4 are also present, though these most often surface when the band pushes the pace. It's less extreme, and the wildness has wandered towards the very end of Pandemic Outbreak's music, although... it's nothing that puts the album in a bad regions. I generally rate this new direction positively, as it brings greater refinement and diversity to the compositions, a nice flow throughout, and a few hooks that keep the songs from being all the same. Besides, it's not like Pandemic Outbreak suddenly started playing sappy songs - they went into death/thrash in a more sophisticated and mature form.

Okay, let's talk about the songs. All of them are of a high standard, but I was most impressed by the tracks whose main purpose is to crush through live performances, such as "Consumed By Flames" (that sudden break at 3:10 is mind-blowing), "Left For Vultures" and "Tales Of The Slaughter" (a remake of a track from the "Collecting The Trophies" ep, but perfectly suited to the album). Similarly, "Skinned While Breathing" is also very good, falling into the waltz category, although Menzel's band comes very close to "God Of Emptiness" - the only thing missing is the lies! at the beginning. Some might find this a bit too Morbid Angel-esque, but I find it a nice blend of references to the American classic. The remaining songs are also quite good, and the fact that the band still takes no prisoners and knows how to play old-school death/thrash is proven by "Beyond My Comprehension" and "Impaled", while in "Ripped Into Pieces" the band even adds a progressive insert to the death/thrash standards, in which the cosmic spirit of Cynic and Pestilence resonates.

"Torment Beyond Comprehension" is a piece of fine death/thrash metal presentation, far from exceptional, but not devoid of ingenuity and a joy to unravel. One might criticize that the solo parts are sometimes a bit too Metallica-esque, a bit sterile, less aggressive than on their debut, and Krzysztof Klingbein, as session drummer, could have played much more densely (perhaps he was instructed not to go overboard), but in return the band offers a wealth of atmospheric parts and instrumental brilliance that more than make up for these shortcomings. While the shift toward maturity and more catchy approach to extreme music usually doesn't appeal to me, on "Torment..." it works surprisingly well, revealing more layers of death/thrash than on previous materials from this band.
