Suppression - "The Sorrow Of Soul Through Flesh" (2022)

Ci chilijscy jegomoście istnieją sobie od 2012 roku, a dopiero teraz (czyli w 2022), jest szansa, że zrobi się o nich głośniej. Tak się jakoś dziwnie bowiem złożyło, że dorobek Suppression przez te 10 lat był bardzo skromny - na koncie widniały raptem tylko dwie demówki i jedna epka. Stan ten jednak - na szczęście - nie trwał wiecznie, a główni założyciele Pablo Cortés (bas) i Daniel Poblete (gitara) podczas pandemii - jakkolwiek absurdalnie by to nie brzmiało w kontekście tego covidowego cyrku - przywrócili zespół do czynnego funkcjonowania. Ściągnęli więc oni do grupy Alejandra Cruza (wokal) oraz Cristophera Zapatę (perkusja) i to z nimi wypuścili na świat debiutancki album pt. "The Sorrow Of Soul Through Flesh". Album, który śmiało może ubiegać się jako jeden z najlepszych, death metalowych krążków w 2022 roku.

Kwartet z Suppression zdołał bowiem niezwykle sprawnie nawiązać do lat 89-93, kiedy death metal bardzo prężnie się rozwijał, a przy tym, zmyślnie i nieco ekstrawagancko te inspiracje przemieszać, ponieważ...w teorii mogłyby one w ogóle ze sobą nie współgrać! "The Sorrow Of Soul Through Flesh" nie jest więc krążkiem, gdzie poszczególne pomysły powrzucano na chybił trafił, a porcją muzyki, która miesza patentami odważnie i nieszablonowo, ale zachowuje klasyczne dla gatunku struktury. Zresztą, jak inaczej określić puszczanie oczka do Death (środkowy okres), Cannibal Corpse (najbardziej z "The Bleeding"), Pestilence (tylko "Spheres"), Gorguts (tego z "The Erosion Of Sanity"), Cynic (demówki + "Focus") i Sadus (maksymalnie do "A Vision Of Misery") w przeciągu jednego kawałka? Wiedza i maniakalne uwielbienie do death metalu to jedno, ale drugim, równie istotnym aspektem jest tutaj wyobraźnia i rozsądne wykorzystanie swojego warsztatu - wszak Chilijczycy upichcili tu jedną, spójną całość. "Monochromatic Chambers", "Lost Eyes", "Misunderstanding Reality" czy "Overfeeding Gaps" to jedne z przykładów jak jednakowo zabójcza i finezyjna jest to muzyka. Powala jej dynamika, gitarowa pomysłowość, ciepło brzmiący bezprogowy bas, wokal pod van Drunena, ale też świetnie wyważona brutalność, która nie przykrywa tych bardziej melodyjnych czy przestrzennych fragmentów. Jedyne, na dodatek bardzo drobne, minusy "The Sorrow..." to instrumentalny "Unwinding Hamonies", w którym - jak na ironię - powinien pojawić się wokal (miejsca nie brakuje) i zbędna akustyczna miniaturka "Arrowheads". Bez tych przeszkadzajek, być może, byłby to materiał...nawet na dychę!

Debiutancki album Suppression jest zatem jednym z tych najbardziej wart sprawdzenia spośród death metalowych premier z 2022 roku. Na "The Sorrow Of Soul Through Flesh" ta chilijska grupa bowiem doskonale przełożyła inspiracje na swoje, a także świetnie pokazała, że wciąż można stworzyć materiał na równie wysokim poziomie co klasyki i do którego wracać się będzie z największą przyjemnością.

These Chilean guys have existed since 2012, and now (in 2022), there is a chance that they will get much more hype. Somehow it happened that the discography of Suppression during these 10 years was very modest - there were only two demos and one ep. Fortunately, this state did not last forever, and the main founders Pablo Cortés (bass) and Daniel Poblete (guitar) during the pandemic - however absurd it might sound in the context of this covid circus - restored the band to active functioning. So they brought Alejander Cruz (vocals) and Cristopher Zapata (drums) to the group, and with them they released their debut album entitled "The Sorrow Of Soul Through Flesh". An album that can confidently claim to be one of the best death metal albums in 2022.

The quartet from Suppression managed to very efficiently refer to the years 89-93, when death metal was developing very dynamically, and at the same time, cleverly and a bit extravagantly mix these inspirations, that...in theory they might not work together at all! So "The Sorrow Of Soul Through Flesh" is not an album where individual ideas are thrown at random, but a portion of music that mixes patents boldly and unconventionally, but retains the structures classic for the genre. Anyway, how else to describe mixing within Death (middle period), Cannibal Corpse (most from "The Bleeding"), Pestilence (only "Spheres"), Gorguts (the one from "The Erosion Of Sanity"), Cynic (demos + "Focus") and Sadus (up to "A Vision Of Misery") in one song? Knowledge and a maniacal love of death metal are one thing, but another, equally important aspect is the imagination and reasonable use of their skills - after all, they have prepared one, coherent concept here. "Monochromatic Chambers", "Lost Eyes", "Misunderstanding Reality" or "Overfeeding Gaps" are some examples of how equally lethal and sophisticated this music is. Dynamics, guitar ingenuity, warmth-sounding fretless bass, vocals in the van Drunen style, but also well-balanced brutality, which does not cover the more melodic or spatial fragments, are really devastating here. The only, additionally very minor, disadvantages of "The Sorrow..." are the instrumental "Unwinding Hamonies", in which - ironically - there should be vocals (there is plenty of space for that) and an unnecessary acoustic miniature of "Arrowheads". Without these distractions, it would be material...even on a maximum rating!

Suppression's debut album is therefore one of the most worth checking out of the 2022 death metal premieres. On "The Sorrow Of Soul Through Flesh", this Chilean group perfectly prepared inspirations into their own, and also showed well that it's still possible to create material at an equally high level as the classics, and to which you will come back with the greatest pleasure.
