Pharmacist - "Flourishing Extremities On Unspoiled Mental Grounds" (2022)
Sequelu do nietypowego worshipowania Carcass nie trzeba było długo wyczekiwać ze strony Pharmacist. Upłynęły dwa lata i cyk, drugi album tegoż projektu zawitał na łamy undergroundowego światka. Trudno było jednak przypuszczać, że od nie zamierzchłych czasów "Medical Renditions Of Grinding Decomposition" zmieni się u Farmaceutów tak dużo, a sama stylistyka będzie już dość luźno powiązana z tą poprzednią. No właśnie, ów "Flourishing Extremities On Unspoiled Mental Grounds" bardzo wymownie odrzuca typowe spojrzenie na goregrind, kierując się w nietuzinkowe i zaskakująco melodyjne rejony.
A już mówiąc nieco bardziej przejrzyście, to całość rozbija się o to, iż na "Flourishing Extremities On Unspoiled Mental Grounds" duet w głównej mierze oparł swoją muzykę o..."Heartwork", "Symphonies Of Sickness" oraz "Swansong" (w tej kolejności). Brzmi niespójnie i niestrawnie? Z pozoru. Otóż, taka egzotyczna mieszanka sprawdza się ze strony Pharmacist wybornie, jak na ironię, prezentując pełną naturalność, pomysłowość i brak poczucia, że zbyt wiele na nim skrajności lub że brakuje tu wpływów "Necroticism". Mało typowy pod tym kątem był również debiut, aczkolwiek tam przeważało granie w hołdzie Carcass z albumów nr 2 i 3. W przypadku dwójki Pharmacist natomiast trzeba mieć już zdecydowanie mocniej otwartą głowę na nieszablonowość.
No bo co my tu właściwie mamy, hmm? Należy wskazać, iż szykowne i bardzo zadziorne, heartworkowe gitarki (w każdym z utworów znaleźć można chociażby mnóstwo potężnych riffów), kawał odważnych melodii, profesjonalną, ale organiczną produkcję, zaawansowane technicznie solówki (pod kątem ilości tappingów niekiedy zalatują onirycznymi klimatami Cynic i Mithras), dużo rozbudowanych motywów oraz trochę swansongowego bujania, a po drugiej stronie, dzikie przyspieszenia, pewną dawkę gitarowej brzydoty z "Symphonies...", gore'owy klimat, dwa porządnie pojechane wokale (z przewagą skrzeku w typie Walker) oraz niemałą ilość wyziewności. I jeśli ktoś pomyśli, że taki kontrast nie zadziała, to niechaj posłucha z jaką lekkością tak różne wpływy się doskonale przenikają m.in. w "Necromorph", tytułowym, "Corpus Sonica", "Accelerating Suppuration" czy "Nursery Aesthetics". Melodie są w nich wyszukane, progresja uzasadniona, ciężar wyeksponowany, a kąśliwość riffów zabójcza - a to tylko część atrakcji. Na koniec warto jeszcze wspomnieć o kwestiach perkusyjnych. W stosunku do debiutu, na "Flourishing..." partie te wypadają wyraźnie lepiej. Dalej nieco dziwacznie brzmią blasty (wstrzelone wręcz maszynowo), aczkolwiek w głównej mierze tempa są umiarkowane i położono w nich znacznie większy nacisk na finezyjność. Przez to, nie ma takiego poczucia obcowania z automatem jak wcześniej.
Dlatego jeśli ciekawi jesteście jak wypada goregrindowa odmienność lub zakładaliście, że takowa w ogóle nie powinna mieć racji bytu, drugi longplay Pharmacist rozwiewa wszelkie wątpliwości. Również w tym nurcie da się ciekawie pokombinować i wynieść dawne standardy na nowy poziom, a wiele melodyjnych oraz progresywnych wpływów nie odbiera charakteru tej muzyce. Powiem więcej, "Flourishing Extremities On Unspoiled Mental Grounds" wręcz na każdym kroku jest prztyczkiem w nos wiadomej kapeli i ich wątpliwego, płytowego powrotu.

Pharmacist did not have to wait long for a sequel to the unusual worship of Carcass. Two years passed and the second album of this project appeared. However, it was difficult to imagine that so much would change for Pharmacists since the recent times of "Medical Renditions Of Grinding Decomposition", and the style itself would be conventionally related to the previous one. Well, "Flourishing Extremities On Unspoiled Mental Grounds" very eloquently rejects the typical view of goregrind, heading into unusual and surprisingly melodic areas.
And to put it a bit more clearly, the whole album is that on "Flourishing Extremities On Unspoiled Mental Grounds" the duo based their music mainly on..."Heartwork", "Symphonies Of Sickness" oraz "Swansong" (in this sequence). Sounds incoherent and indigestible? Seemingly. Well, such an exotic mix works wonderfully for Pharmacist, ironically, presenting complete naturalness, ingenuity and no feeling of too many opposites or of lacking the influence of "Necroticism". The debut was also untypical in this aspect, although it was dominated by music related to Carcass from albums no. 2 and 3. However, in the case of the second album by Pharmacist, you have to be much more open to unconventionality.
Well, what do we actually have here, huh? It should be noted that subtle and very feisty, heartwork-like guitars (in each of the songs you can find a lot of powerful riffs), a lot of bold melodies, professional but organic production, technically advanced solos (in terms of the number of tappings, they sometimes sound like Cynic and Mithras), a lot of extended motifs and a bit of swansong-like paces, and on the other side, wild accelerations, a certain dose of guitar ugliness in the style of "Symphonies...", a gore atmosphere, two pathological vocals (with a predominance of Walker-type screeches) and a considerable amount of brutality. And if anyone thinks that such a contrast won't work, just listen to how easily such different influences cooperate together, e.g. in "Necromorph", the title track, "Corpus Sonica", "Accelerating Suppuration" and "Nursery Aesthetics". The melodies are sophisticated, the progression is meaningful, the heaviness well-exposed and the power of riffs is crushing - and these are not all of the attractions. Finally, it's worth mentioning drums issues. Compared to the debut, on "Flourishing..." these parts are clearly better. The blast beats still sound a bit strange (as if shotted from a machine), although the paces are mostly moderate and there is much more emphasis on finesse. Due to this, there is no such feeling of interacting with the machine as before.
Therefore, if you are curious about the different side of goregrind or you assumed that it should not exist at all, the second lp by Pharmacist dispels all doubts. In this style, you can also mix things up in an interesting way and take old standards to a new level and many melodic and progressive influences do not take away from the character of this music. Well, "Flourishing Extremities On Unspoiled Mental Grounds" shows at every step what a comeback album by a well-known band should look like.
